Johnson in the groove at Liberty National

Updated: 22/09/2023

Dustin Johnson says he expects to have a good weekend at the Northern Trust after moving into a one-shot lead at the halfway stage at Liberty National.

The world number two is a two-time winner of the opening event of the FedEx Cup play-offs and is the 2/1 favourite with Betfred to add a third title to his CV.

The 36-year-old sits on 12-under after the second round, bouncing back from a bogey at the first to card a four-under 67.

DJ, a winner of five FedEx Cup play-off events previously, could have gone lower, passing up several birdie opportunities.

However, he was unconcerned by the missed chances, believing it just goes to show his game is strong heading into the weekend.

“I’ve got a lot of control with the golf ball and hitting a lot of really nice shots and rolled in a couple putts today which is nice, but still feel like I left quite a few out there,” Johnson told the PGA Tour website.

“I’m in a good position heading into the weekend, and if I can keep swinging the way I am, I think it’s going to be a good weekend.”

Johnson leads by one shot from 2015 FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth after he blitzed the Liberty National course to move into contention, carding eight birdies and a bogey to sign for a 64.

Spieth, who lost in a play-off to Johnson at the 2017 Northern Trust, has only dropped one shot in his first two rounds and is a 15/2 chance to win his first event since the 2017 Open.

Patrick Reed and Jon Rahm are part of a group two shots off the lead heading into Saturday while defending FedEx Cup champion Justin Rose (9/5 Top Five Finish) and Rory McIlroy (6/5) look handily placed at nine-under.

McIlroy had to wait until after his round had finished to learn he had shot a 68, the Northern Irishman having a two-shot penalty at the 14th for touching the sand in a greenside bunker rescinded.

However, it was another day to forget for Tiger Woods after he withdrew before teeing off on Friday, citing a “a mild oblique” issue.
