Lucas Bjerregaard (4/1 to win tournament) is through to the semi-finals of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play following surprise victory over Tiger Woods.
The 27-year-old Dane, who is yet to lose a match in Austin this week, was 1 down with three holes left to play, but a superb eagle at the par-five 16th brought him back on level terms with 14-time major winner Woods.
Things were still all-square heading down the 18th, but as Bjerregaard made par, Woods, who beat Rory McIlroy earlier in the day to book his quarter-final place, saw his effort from five-feet go wide of the mark, which handed a surprise victory to his opponent.
Bjerregaard, who is the 50th seed for this week’s tournament and has never won a PGA Tour event, was clearly delighted to have overcome a player of Woods’ quality and he feels he learned a lot from coming directly up against the former world number one.
“We had a great match and it was a shame it had to end like this,” Bjerregaard said. “Obviously I’m happy to come out on the winning side and I really enjoyed playing with him [Tiger Woods] today.”
Matt Kuchar will be Bjerregaard’s opponent in the semi-finals on Sunday after he claimed a 2 up victory over Sergio Garcia, although he had to withstand a late rally from the Spaniard, who picked up three birdies over a four-hole stretch on the back nine (Match Betting – Kuchar 8/13, Bjerregaard 5/4).
Sunday’s other semi-final will see Open champion Francesco Molinari come up against last year’s runner up in Austin, Kevin Kisner (Match Betting – Molinari 4/7, Kisner 11/8).
Molinari, who claimed his third PGA Tour title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this month, booked his place in the last four by thrashing Kevin Na 6&5, while Kisner claimed a 2&1 success over Louis Oosthuizen.
