Rory McIlroy feels he is only a few tweaks away from returning to the winner’s circle as he prepares for this week’s WGC-Mexico Championship (McIlroy 11/1 – Outright Betting).

The 29-year-old finished in a share of fourth at the Genesis Open as American JB Holmes hung on to claim the spoils at Riviera Country Club.

That followed on from a tied-fourth finish at the Tournament of Champions while the Northern Irishman ended up in a share of fifth at the Farmers Insurance Open.

The four-time major winner has started the year in fine form and believes that a couple of minor adjustments is all he needs to challenge for honours.

“The game’s right there,” he told Sky Sports. “I’m happy with pretty much everything. Just a couple of loose shots here and there with the irons and tidy that up.

“I’ve still got a bit of a right miss going on with the longer clubs, just try to get that out of the game and we’ll be right there.”

Holmes played some solid golf on the back nine to finish one stroke clear of Justin Thomas although he faced criticism due to his slow play.

However, the Kentucky resident defended himself after winning his first tournament in nearly four years.

“You play in 25-mile-an-hour gusty winds and see how fast you play,” he said. “You can’t just get up there and whack it when it’s blowing that hard.”

Adam Scott’s challenge faded on the final day while a nightmare run with the putter did for Thomas, who four-putted the 13th to effectively end his chances.

The US star rallied but could not match Holmes’ score. However, he is the 9/1 favourite to win in Mexico.

Phil Mickelson (28/1) will defend his title at Naucalpan while Thomas will hope to go one better after losing to ‘Lefty’ in a play-off 12 months ago.

Odds subject to change.
