Tottenham’s Pochettino warns early Transfer deadline of Premier League players could cause disruption - (2025)
Updated: 20/01/2025
Mauricio Pochettino fears the new early transfer deadline could cause foreign clubs to cause upset to the Premier League A-listers this summer.
The Tottenham boss is quietly confident of retaining Spurs star striker Harry Kane from the grasps of Real Madrid. But he believes other clubs could be left with unhappy players.
“That would be one of the concerns for everyone,” said Pochettino. “It is not the way they are going to behave – how they make the offer, or do anything.
“But every single player is going to react in a different way. It is a massive advantage for the rest of Europe.
Spurs will stave off even mega-money offers for Kane after August 9 — but will he be happy?
“We will see how it works, but you have the risk that things will happen and it will be difficult for you to react. I don’t believe that it is a good idea to finish the transfer market before Europe does.”
English Premier League clubs voted earlier this season for future summer transfer windows to close on August 9 – before the new campaign begins. But French, German and Spanish clubs will still be able to buy and sell until August 31.
It means top-flight football clubs here could be left unable to replace their star players tapped up by foreign giants after the English window has closed. This would leave the Premier League clubs in a distinct disadvantage over the European competitors.
As it happens Spurs were among the 14 clubs that backed the changes to the summer transfer window.
Five clubs – Manchester United, Manchester City, Watford, Swansea and Crystal Palace voted against, while Burnley abstained.
Pochettino pointed to Philippe Coutinho, who forced a January move from Liverpool to Barcelona, and Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, who went to Anfield in the same window as examples of the potential downside of the new window.
The Dutchman had made it clear last summer that he no longer wished to play for the Saints once Liverpool made their intentions clear.
Pochettino insists there will be no celebrating despite Spurs securing another Champions League berth.
Pochettino, talking before Sunday's season-finale at home to Leicester, added: “Coutinho was fantastic. For Southampton, it was a massive problem for Van Dijk.
“I don’t say that is a good example, but if some big club is going to try to buy somebody from our club it is how you manage the situation. If this club wants to buy this player and you are not allowing him to go, how will he be on a mental level?
“It is a situation which, for sure, in the next few years we need to fix. We need to have Europe with the same deadline.”
