Sergio Aguero injury: Will the Man City striker be fit for the Everton match in Gameweek 17? - (2025)

Updated: 26/01/2025

For the first quarter of the season Sergio Aguero was the front runner in the Fantasy Premier League points takes, picking up 82 points in the first thirteen Gameweeks.

In the past three Gameweeks, however, the veteran forward has been absent. He missed out on Pep Guardiola‘s last three Premier League squads due to a muscle injury – and in Gameweek 16 his killer touch was sorely missed by the defending Premier League champions.

Now the striker is in a race for fitness ahead of City‘s match with Everton.

Could Aguero return against Everton?

Ahead of Man City's defeat at Stamford Bridge, Guardiola dropped a hint that Aguero could return in Gameweek 17.

Speaking via the club's official website, the Spaniard said of Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne's injury: “No, both cannot play tomorrow. Both will be back soon.”

The use of “soon” is vague, but suggests that Aguero could be set to return in Gameweek 17 for the Everton fixture.

Should I bring him back into my starting 11?

Not just yet. Wait for a further update at Guardiola's press conference on Tuesday ahead of the Champions League fixture against German outfit Hoffenheim.

Finally, hold out for one final update on Friday ahead of the City gaffer's Premier League presser.

Alternatives up front

If you're looking for a layer to fill a Sergio Aguero-sized hole in your strikeforce then look to one of these forwards.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) is second to only Mo Salah in the Premier League scoring charts so far this season with ten goals. The Gabonese should prove a reliable source of goals through the busy December period.
  • Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m) has been overshadowed by Aubameyang so far this season, but represents a lower cost option up front. The Frenchman has scored six and assisted five so far this season.
  • Harry Kane (£12.5m) is arguably the best option up front for the coming Gameweeks given Spurs' kind run of fixtures. But the Englishman comes at a price, costing £1.3m more than the injured Aguero.

i verdict

Don't make any rash decisions on the inclusion of Aguero just yet. Hold out for Guardiola's two press conferences and then consider bringing him back in from the cold, depending on what is said.

If the striker seems set to miss another Gameweek then recruit Kane, or Aubameyang depending on your virtual financial situation.
