‘Mohamed Salah is getting into a habit’: Richard Keys questions Liverpool penalty vs Brighton

Updated: 12/12/2024

Richard Keys has questioned Mohamed Salah‘s integrity, accusing the Liverpool forward of “making the most of challenges” in order to con referees.

Liverpool maintained their lead at the top of the Premier League thanks to a 1-0 win over Brighton sealed thanks to a second-half Salah penalty.

But Keys, the BeIn Sports anchor and erstwhile Sky Sports host, accused the Egyptian of going down softly while under pressure from Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross and says it is not the first time he has done so.

Enough to take him down?

“I think he’s getting into the habit of making the most of challenges,” Keys said. “There was a tug on his shirt, in fairness, but enough to take him down in the manner that he collapsed? I don’t know.”

Co-host Andy Gray agreed, saying: “I think in any big game now, certain coaches might just remind officials that he is going to ground… easily. But there was a tug on his shirt.”

Salah recently came in for criticism for a similar incident when winning a crucial penalty against Newcastle on Boxing Day, going to ground easily when challenged by defender Paul Dummett.

How penalty incident unfolded

The key incident occurred in the 49th minute as Salah ran into the box, pivoted sharply and turned past Pascal Gross.

As Salah bore down on goal again, the Brighton midfielder appeared to grab hold of his shoulder and then clip the back of his foot when he attempted to shoot.

‘No complaints'

Speaking after the game, Brighton manager Chris Hughton said he was disappointed with the overall performance of referee Kevin Friend, but could have “no complaints” over the penalty decision.

“I feel for Pascal because Mo Salah is probably the most dangerous player once he gets in those positions, one-v-one.

“It was difficult for Pascal but there were no complaints.

“I just thought on the balance of decisions, no malice towards the referee who is trying to do the best job he can, I thought it favoured Liverpool on the balance of decisions in the game.”
