Liverpool vs Sunderland Preview and Score Predictions
David Moyes's boys brought to an end a horrifying 10-match win-less run with consecutive wins of 1-2 against Bournemouth and 3-0 against Hull City. What makes the recovery more impressive is that Bournemouth is a top-half team who are on the 10th spot of the EPL table currently. Whether this new found confidence is enough to fetch Sunderland success when they visit Anfield on Saturday is another matter altogether.
Jurgen Klopp's Reds are just one point behind table- toppers Chelsea and have banged in the highest number of goals (30) of all Premier League teams this season. Although the 0-0 draw played out at St. Mary's stadium against Southampton last week was a bit of a dampener on Liverpool's goalfest, few expect anything miraculous to happen at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds have scored 17 goals from their five home games which works out to an average of 3.4 goals per match; this includes a 0-0 draw against Manchester United in October.
19th placed Sunderland have a tally of 12 goals so far in the 2016-17 which is surprisingly more than that of Middlebrough, Burnley and Southampton, all of whom are places above the Black Cats on the table. Moyes will once again depend heavily on Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe to give him a goal at least at Anfield. The two strikers have an astonishing count of 10 goals alone for the Black Cats – Defoe (7) and Anichebe (3). Moyes could probably revert to a strategy he adopted at the beginning of the season, when he almost shut out Manchester City at the Etihad in August. Only a 87th minute goal saved the Premier League giant the blushes in a narrow 2-1 win.
Billy Jones, Patrick van Aanholt, Lamine Kone and Didier Ndong did a stellar job at defending against a Hull side that hogged nearly 60 per cent possession last week in their 0-3 loss to the Black Cats. But whether the Sunderland defence could hold against the likes of Firminio, Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Lallana remains to be seen.
One thing the Black Cats can take note of is that the Reds have been scored against in 10 out of their 12 outings. They have the right man in Defoe to exploit such a weakness. But that could be wishful thinking. Expect Jurgen Klopp's men to saunter through to a win. But yes, the way some of the lower order teams like Middlesbrough and Swansea City have troubled top-class opposition on occasions, the element of surprise will always lurk round the corner.
