Liverpool vs Arsenal: Player ratings as Klopp’s Reds make a statement
Updated: 08/10/2024
Liverpool
Alisson 7/10
Lofted a fantastic ball out to the right-hand side to start the move that ended with Salah winning a penalty in the first half. Claimed a couple of dangerous balls, but was largely unchallenged.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 7/10
Allowed to push on and play incredibly high on the right-hand side, almost as more of a winger than a full back when Liverpool have the ball. Not able to influence the game as much in the final third, as other players stepped up to the plate in that regard.
Dejan Lovren 7/10
Won a second-half penalty for Liverpool after being shoved over by Kolasinac. Solid, fairly easy evening for the Croatia international, who wasn't asked a great deal of questions by Arsenal's front three.
Virgil Van Dijk 7/10
Solid and assured at centre back in yet another composed and classy performance. Had the legs to negate the impact of Aubameyang up front.
Andy Robertson 7/10
Caught a little far upfield in the build-up to the first goal, as Maitland-Niles was able to score unchallenged at the back post, but was otherwise solid. Offered an outlet high on the left flank.
Fabinho 7/10
Sat at the base of midfield, but was fairly sloppy in the first half. Stepped it up after the break, helping Liverpool to control proceedings and limit Arsenal to a handful of failed breakaways.
Giorginio Wijnaldum 8/10
Solid showing, providing plenty of energy and looking after the ball well. Does the unsung things well and ensures that Klopp's side have got solid foundations to build upon, knitting play together but also working hard off the ball.
Xherdan Shaqiri 7/10
Given plenty of liberty to roam in midfield ahead of Wijnaldum and Fabinho. Continues to show good chemistry with Salah and is capable of weighting his passes brilliantly.
Mohamed Salah 8/10
Provided a neat assist to put a gilt-edged chance into Mane's path to make it 3-1. Won his side a penalty just before the half-time break and scored it himself to lead Liverpool into the dressing room with the scoreline at 4-1. Some lovely dribbling and pieces of skill throughout.
Roberto Firmino 9/10
Equalised to make it 1-1, netting his first Premier League goal of the season at Anfield in fortuitous circumstances. Made it 2-1 moments later with a fantastic individual effort, wriggling past several men before slamming home a low finish. Completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.
Sadio Mane 7/10
Slammed home a close-range finish to make it 3-1, getting in behind the Arsenal central defenders easily to tap home a Salah pass. Provided plenty of energy to press nervous opponents.
Substitutions
Jordan Henderson 6.5/10
Introduce with half an hour left to play, slotting into midfield to allow Shaqiri to push on further. Had some nice touches to link up with Salah and went close with a late strike.
Adam Lallana 6/10
Given a run out late in the game against a leaky Arsenal side. Looked to show for the ball and be positive.
Nathaniel Clyne 5/10
Fortunate to get away with a poor challenge in the penalty area, which should have given Arsenal a chance to score from the spot after catching Lacazette's foot.
Arsenal
Bernd Leno 6/10
Had no chance for any of Liverpool's first four goals, with his back four selling him short. Kept very busy indeed, making several good saves to keep the scoreline below a ridiculous amount. Nervy with the ball at his feet on occasion, however.
Stephan Lichtsteiner 4/10
Should have done far better in the build-up to Firmino's equaliser at 1-1, striking a clearance against one of his own teammates. Played Salah onside in the lead-up to Mane's goal to make it 3-1. A torrid 90 minutes.
Shkodran Mustafi 4/10
Replaced by Koscielny at half time, could have potentially felt the strain of a hamstring problem which had kept him out for a while – or it could have been purely technical from Unai Emery. Couldn't get close to Liverpool's forward three and was tormented.
Sokratis 4/10
Caught the wrong side of Mane and was very much out of position in the build-up to Liverpool's third. Brought down Salah for a penalty just before the half-time break with a clumsy challenge from the wrong side of his man. Looked a yard off the pace.
Sead Kolasinac 4/10
Gave away a cheap penalty for a push on Lovren in the second half. Unable to offer much output in attack down the left-hand side, which was where the Bosnia international shone against Burnley. An evening to forget.
Granit Xhaka 5/10
Unfortunate to see a well-timed sliding challenge to deny Salah roll through towards goal in the build-up to Firmino's first. Picked up a booking for a rash tackle and was fortunate to not see a second for kicking the ball away in frustration during the aftermath.
Lucas Torreira 5/10
Gave the ball away incredibly cheaply in the build-up to Liverpool's second of the evening, before then slipping over when trying to recover to challenge the Brazilian. Could only help Arsenal to retain fairly stale possession.
Aaron Ramsey 5/10
Frustrating evening for the Welshman, who was unable to get on the ball in pockets of space that would threaten Liverpool. Instead was limited and did more running off the ball. Didn't offer his usual thrust.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles 6/10
Attacked the back post well to open the scoring at Anfield, and was very positive in possession, looking to craft half chances both for himself and those around him. A little rough around the edges, but another quite promising performance from the youngster.
Alex Iwobi 6/10
Started brightly, before whipping a lovely ball to the back post to provide an assist for Maitland-Niles to slide home a close-range finish. Caused some problems for Alexander-Arnold on the break, using his acceleration positively. The best of a poor bunch.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 5/10
Given no service in the first half, four of his seven touches were from taking kick offs. Poked a finish over the bar from point-blank range in the second half, but was glad to see the flag raised for offside. Given no service and was very isolated.
Substitutions
Laurent Koscielny 6/10
Introduced at half time in place of Mustafi. Nipped in to make a couple of good interventions, improving slightly on the complete defensive madness of the first half.
Alexandre Lacazette 6/10
Dropped in deep to try and link midfield to attack for a struggling Arsenal, playing some inviting passes. Unlucky to not win a late penalty after drawing a kick from Clyne in the opposing penalty area.
Matteo Guendouzi 5/10
Looked to inject some legs late on into a midfield that had long been struggling.
