Joe Gomez injury: Will the Liverpool defender play against Brighton and Crystal Palace? - (2025)

Before picking up an injury against Burnley at the beginning of December, Joe Gomez had outlined himself as Jurgen Klopp's first-choice deputy to star centre-back Virgil Van Dijk.

Against the Clarets however, the up-and-coming defender sustained an ankle fracture which saw him miss out the bulk of the congested festive period.

He has been sorely missed by the Anfield faithful, as well as Fantasy Premier League managers who relied heavily on the Englishman for cheap clean sheet points.

Is he close to returning?

Ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup tie with Wolves Klopp provided positive news on the 21-year-old's recovery from injury.

He said: Joe and Joel [Matip] look good – obviously not good enough for Monday, not good enough I would say for the game after that, for Brighton, [but] hopefully then they are at least in full team training.

“I think for Joel it would be possible, for Joe at least there’s a little hope that it can be the same, so we will see.

“Joe had a good day, a very good day [on Friday], so that’s good.”

By the sounds of it, Gomez stands a slim chance of featuring against Brighton, but will be back in contention for Liverpool's match against Crystal Palace.

Should I bring him back into my FPL squad?

No.

Gomez is reaching the tail end of his recovery from injury, but will likely miss Liverpool's Gameweek 22 fixture against Brighton. At best he will appear off the bench for the league leaders.

If he makes a substitute appearance in Gameweek 22 then consider recruiting him for Liverpool's fixture against goal-shy Crystal Palace.

Alternative defenders

Instead of recruiting Gomez, Fantasy Premier League players should sign one of these budget point-scoring defenders.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) has been a cult favourite among Fantasy Premier League players due to his budget price and his consistent performances for Crystal Palace. Other than Liverpool in Gameweek 23, Palace face a winnable run of fixtures taking on Watford, Southampton, Fulham, West Ham and Leicester.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m) is ludicrously under priced at £5.2m. The Englishman has racked up 87 points so far this season and should feature prominently for Liverpool as they chase their first league title in 29 years.

Cedric (£4.2m). Looking to bank some cash to spend elsewhere? Consider signing Southampton defender Cedric as his side continue to improve under the stewardship of Ralph Hasenhüttl. The Saints managed a clean sheet in their last Premier League outing against Chelsea.

i verdict

Hold off signing Gomez until after Liverpool's fixture with Brighton.

Ahead of Gameweek 23 keep an eye out for further updates from Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp over the defender's fitness.
