Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Preview and Score Predictions
Tottenham's much vaunted defence that has earned the distinction of conceding the least number of goals in the Premier league is gradually beginning to lose its plot. Mauricio Pochettino's decision to bench right back Ben Davies and center-back Jan Vertonghen in the Spurs' do-or-die UEFA Champions clash against Monaco FC will remain shrouded in mystery.
The Monaco forwards were able to make inroads into the Tottenham defence with impunity and had it not been for the heroics of goalkeeper and skipper Hugo Lloris, Tottenham's margin of loss would have been much worse than the 1-2 they had to contend with.
The Lillywhites were even put under a lot of pressure by sudden counter-attacks in their Premier League outing against minions West Ham last weekend. Again it was a newcomer in the form of 20-year old Harry Winks whose 51st minute goal was the clincher in Spurs' narrow 3-2 win. A indication of Tottenham's weakening back line is the fact that the two goals they conceded against the Hammers was the most they did in a match in the 2016-17 Premier League season.
It is against the backdrop of all this, Pochettino's men undertake a visit to Stamford Bridge on November 26 They take on a Chelsea brimming with confidence. Antonio Conte's men have breezed through six consecutive wins without conceding even once.
A hard fought 0-1 win against 15th placed Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium last weekend may give the Spurs the notion that the Blues may be faltering a bit, but that should be well negated by the 5-0 thrashing meted out to Everton at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago.
The prolonged absence of stalwarts like Branislav Ivanovic, Cesc Fabregas, Oscar and Willian for various reasons haven't made much of a difference to Chelsea. It has provided a chance for folks like Victor Moses, Marcos Alonso and Pedro to prove their true worth. Luiz, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Matic and Moses are combining flawlessly at the back and center resulting in clean sheets in the last six games.
With the kind of sloppiness shown by strikers Son Heung-min and Dele Alli in Monaco when they missed out on sitters, Spurs are not going to find the back of the net by any chance on Thursday. The inclusion of Moussa Sissoko and Vincent Janssen upfront is not making any sense either , given their lackluster performances.
This could very well be the moment when the Spurs defence may just cave in, faced with the likes of Deigo Costa and Eden Hazard who are on a roll and already have 17 goals between them so far. Unfettered by any European outing in the current 2016-17 season, Chelsea are well-focused in their quest for Premier League glory and Tottenham could just end being a casualty in the path of the onrushing Blues.
A scoreline of 2-0 in favour of Antonio Conte's men seems to be on the cards and one can stick one's neck out for a 3-0 scoreline, too.
