Wilder v Fury Preview: Heavyweights collide on biggest stage
Updated: 19/11/2024
Odds and preview ahead of the big fight
Deontay Wilder v Tyson Fury.
Many are calling it the fight of year in the heavyweight division.
The talking finally stops and two of the biggest names in the sport collide in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Mike Costello and Steve Bunce BBC Radio show said this could be the most significant fight in the division since Lennox Lewis’ win over Vitali Klitschko in 2003.
Wilder’s WBC Heavyweight belt is on the line at the Staples Center. But will he feel the fury at the hands of the Gypsy King?
How have we got here?
There was a lot of talk about an Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder unification fight.
But as AJ puts his feet up it for the year, there’s only one real contender left that would capture the fans imagination.
Wilder finally has someone to dance with both in and out of the ring. The Bronze Bomber is used to drumming up his own hype around his fights.
But Fury is cut from the same cloth in that respect.
The intensity has ramped up ever since the fight was officially announced in September.
Fury – the lineal champ – has been fully-focused on regaining his belts following his ban from the sport in 2015.
After two comeback fights this year, he’s got his shot at supremacy again.
Deontay Wilder
Wilder’s record speaks for itself at 40-0. This will be the eighth-time he defends his WBC title.
He’s had an emphatic career to date defeating Bermane Stiverne twice.
And he perhaps silenced critics that suggested he’s just a puncher by going ten rounds in the win over Luis Ortiz in March.
The American could look to end this early. He’s only been taken past round five, four times in his entire career.
Tyson Fury
Fury said this is ‘just another fight’ but a win this weekend could be the spark for an era of domination for the Gypsy King.
The 30-year-old is well-respected in the sport for being one of the most gifted fighters around – especially after his win over Wladimir Klitschko.
Former heavyweight champs Evander Holyfield and Lewis are in agreement that Fury should win if the fight goes the distance.
Mike Tyson has praised Fury’s resolve and said: “Although Wilder’s punch is strong, nothing can compare to the mental strength Fury has shown both in and out of the ring.”
Fight odds and Prediction
This could be a real grudge match with Fury to win on points at 9/4.
The Englishman to get knocked down but still come out with victory is at 8’s.
Wilder may feel his best shot of scoring a win is by knockout. He’s Evens to win by KO or Disqualification.
Fury called Wilder ‘the fiercest puncher of all time’ on Costello and Bunce. The American is at 6/1 to win inside four rounds.
