Which Premier League teams will be busiest in the January transfer window?
Updated: 17/11/2024
The mid-season window is now open
With the onset of January and a New Year, comes the opening of the mid-season transfer window.
It offers teams the chance to strengthen squad depth, or bring in an extra level of quality. It can also mean a difficult time for sides looking to keep hold of key players.
A number of clubs have already made moves. West Ham United have signed Samir Nasri and Chelsea have snapped up Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund, although he won’t arrive until next season.
But which Premier League teams will be busiest in the window? Here’s our take on who could be in for a hectic few weeks…
Southampton
New Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has plenty to do on the South Coast in a bid to avoid relegation.
Despite a recent history of profitable sales, the Saints’ current roster is large and pricey. Hasenhuttl hasn’t got much room to sign new players without first offloading some.
Manolo Gabbiadini, Steven Davis and Cedric Soares are three players who could reportedly move on in order to free up wages. It won’t be easy, but the new manager wants to make changes this month, so can he force them through?
Fulham
Fellow strugglers Fulham are in a similar situation, having recently appointed Claudio Ranieri on a multi-year deal.
They spent £100m in the summer, but owner Shahid Khan may dip into his pocket again if he thinks it can ensure Premier League survival and that bumper TV money income.
The Cottagers will surely focus on defensive improvements having shipped 47 goals so far, with the experienced Gary Cahill the most likely arrival. However, they may require – and sign – more than just the England international.
Arsenal
Unai Emery is still trying to find his way at Arsenal, with a squad largely assembled by his predecessor Arsene Wenger.
Aaron Ramsey is to begin talks with five of Europe’s biggest clubs, and he could open up wages at the Gunners should he move this month.
The big one is Mesut Ozil, however. Arsenal’s biggest earner has been left in the cold by the new boss. Not many clubs can afford him, but should Ozil move on, Arsenal could splash the cash.
Bigger changes are expected from him in the summer, but Emery could yet move for a third striker to cover the injured Danny Welbeck, while a successor to Nacho Monreal is also needed at left-back.
Bournemouth
After a storming start to the season, things have gone sour for the Cherries. Eddie Howe’s men have won just two of their last 10 league games.
Only four of those matches came against sides outside the top six, and though relegation remains unlikely, the stark loss of form may tempt the South Coast club into the market.
A long-term injury to skipper Simon Francis may force their hand for a defensive arrival, too.
And the quietest…
With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only handed a temporary role, it seems unlikely that Manchester United will move much this month.
Financial constraints are likely to keep Tottenham Hotspur quiet too, while any midfield concerns for Liverpool have been eased by the news that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could yet return for the end of the season.
