What next for Mourinho after Man United exit? Latest odds and opinion

Latest Mourinho next club odds and betting

So then, where does Jose Mourinho go next? That’s the question on everyone’s lips after the Portuguese manager was sacked by Manchester United on Tuesday morning.

There’s a sense that the 55-year-old is now tainted after this latest dismissal. And as his third season syndrome comes home to roost yet again, we’ve priced up a potential list of destinations and had our say on what we think happens next.

International

National teams don’t carry the same sort of day-to-day intensity and public pressure demanded by club jobs. Given Mourinho’s spectacular third season meltdowns at Manchester United and Chelsea that should be a good thing. It’s difficult to rub people up the wrong way when you see them a fraction of the time.

The Coral traders agree. They make Mourinho a 7/2 chance to replace Fernando Santos as Portugal manager. The only problem there is that the current incumbent has a contract running until 2020 and recently achieved success by guiding his country to the Nations League Finals.

Furthermore, Mourinho is not one to shy away from a challenge. He’ll likely see international management as a step down and an admittance of defeat at the elite level. With that in mind his odds of 22/1 to be the next England manager look too short.

European Clubs

We have little doubt that Mourinho will want to remain in the club game. The problem for the sacked one is that he’s fast running out of elite level clubs to manage. After burning bridges in spectacular style at Chelsea, Real Madrid and now Man United, he’s becoming tainted.

Not only that, but most of Europe’s big clubs have managers. And those potentially looking to change will be well aware of the dull as dishwater style of football employed by Mourinho at Old Trafford. A lacklustre style is fine as long as you’re winning things – Mourinho isn’t even doing that anymore.

Real Madrid are 7/2 to take him back. Juventus and AC Milan at 8/1 apiece are perhaps likelier options with his dogmatic style more likely to work in Italy. A Paris Saint-Germain side looking to add style to substance are unlikely to stand for his approach at 10/1. Moves to Atletico Madrid (12/1), Porto (9/1) and Benfica (16/1) are also doubtful for a variety of reasons.

China and MLS

It goes without saying that the standard of football in the MLS and Chinese Super League is not on par with Europe. So Mourinho would be unlikely to want to take what he would perceive to be a step down.  But he might not have much choice if he wants to remain in club management.

At least this way he’d be out of the spotlight, out of mind and have a chance to enjoy himself again while retaining the day-to-day enjoyment of managing a club. And he’d probably get a decent payday out of it too. We make it 11/2 that China is his next destination, with 14/1 about the MLS.
