Weekend Talking Points: Man United falter and Titans thrash Patriots
Updated: 19/11/2024
NBA and Bundesliga also feature
It’s been another huge weekend of sport, from Premier League crackers to crucial Bundesliga clashes – as well as action across the Atlantic.
We take a look back at five major talking points, kicking off with the NFL where Mike Vrabel’s men pulled off one of the season’s most eye-catching results…
Titans get playoff revenge to leave Patriots reeling
It was a weekend to forget for New England Patriots. Bill Belichick’s side suffered their heaviest loss for over four years – falling to a 34-10 defeat in Nashville.
Tennessee Titans suffered playoff heartbreak in New England last season, with their Super Bowl ended by a stunning second-quarter Pats blitz.
After a patchy start to the season, the Titans have suddenly found their feet, with two tremendous defensive displays in a row. Against Dallas Cowboys and the Pats, they’ve conceded a combined three Touchdowns.
Factor in that Quarterback Marcus Mariota has thrown for over 200 yards in each of his last three outings, and the future looks bright for the Titans.
Red Devils’ slow start hampers them again
Manchester United may be firmly in the Premier League’s top half, but only three sides have conceded the opening goal in more Prem games this season. All of those teams are placed 16th or below.
The Red Devils shipped the first goal for the seventh time in 12 league games yesterday, as they lost at Manchester City. And the visitors’ defence was sloppy and disorganised as they allowed David Silva to net his 12th minute strike.
While they’ve come from behind to win two of their last three games in all competitions, this game proved that they can’t afford to keep starting games slowly. Next up is a home clash with Crystal Palace, where United are 4/11 to Score First.
Dortmund grab a lift in title tilt
Before this Bundesliga campaign began, the odds suggested it was very much Bayern Munich’s crown to lose. But the ball is now in Borussia Dortmund’s court after the table-toppers bagged maximum points in Der Klassiker.
Despite trailing twice, BVB eventually secured victory thanks to loan ace Paco Alcacer’s ninth goal in eight games since his arrival. The weekend’s results leave Bayern in fifth place, seven points off the top and below Eintracht Frankfurt.
That’s all seen a shift in the outright odds, with Dortmund now 10/11 to lift the title – making them joint-favourites alongside Niko Kovac’s side.
Cavs nightmare continues with Bulls loss
While most sides slump after losing their star man, Cleveland Cavaliers’ fall since LeBron James’ off-season exit has been instant and monumental.
After making the last four NBA Finals – winning in 2016 – they currently have the worst record in the entire NBA this season. The weekend’s defeat to a poor Chicago Bulls side left the Cavs at 1-11.
Having already fired Tyronn Lue as head coach earlier this season, the pressure is now mounting on his replacement Larry Drew. As for LeBron, he’s just led the Los Angeles Lakers to a third straight win – being top points-scorer in each game.
Warnock’s Bluebirds showing some fight
Many expected Cardiff City to suffer relegation from the Premier League with a whimper this term. But Neil Warnock’s men are showing they’re made of sterner stuff.
The South Wales outfit bagged a second win in three home games, as they pulled off a hard-fought comeback win against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Sol Bamba was the hero, bagging a 90th minute winner – but this was very much a steely and organised team display. The result drags Warnock’s side up to 18th place, and sees their relegation odds drift out to 1/2.
