UEFA Nations League Tuesday ACCA: Glory days for Sweden and Scotland

Updated: 18/11/2024

And so the curtain comes down on the inaugural Nations League group stage. Some teams, like Portugal, are already certain of their place in next summer’s ‘Finals,’ but there are still spots to be decided, with promotion and relegation on the line. Here are four picks for your ACCA this Tuesday, starting in Portugal.

Portugal vs. Poland

Tuesday, 20 November, 19:45

In truth, this match doesn’t mean much. The Nations League was designed to eliminate meaningless games, but this particular fixture goes against that notion. It means that Fernando Santos might use the opportunity to give some of his fringe players a run out.

Poland have been struggled for quite some time now and are on a run of three straight defeats. Star man Robert Lewandowski is not in the squad due to a knee injury and his likely replacement Krzystof Piatek of Genoa is out of form at the moment having not scored in five straight games. Many areas of the Polish team aren’t functioning so well right now and Portugal should breeze through this clash.

Sweden vs. Russia

Tuesday, 20 November, 19:45

It’s all on the line in this match, with both Sweden and Russia vying for top spot in their Nations League group. As things stand, Russia hold a three-point advantage over their opponents and so a draw would be enough for them to secure promotion and a place in the ‘Finals.’

Both teams are missing a number of key players, with Victor Lindelof out injured for Sweden and Denis Cheryshev, Aleksandr Golovin and Roman Zobnin all sidelined for Russia. Sweden have a knack for getting the job done when it matters, though, and are unbeaten in three games.

Scotland vs. Israel

Tuesday, 20 November, 19:45

This is where the real excitement could be in the Nations League on Tuesday night. Scotland and Israel are level on points heading into the final group fixture. If Scotland win, following on from their 4–0 dismantling of Albania, they qualify for the ‘Finals.’ Anything else and Israel make it through.

We can expect goals from both sides; Scotland have scored at least once in all of their last four games and Israel have netted in three straight games.

Eran Zahavi will be back for Israel having missed the reverse game against Scotland. Meanwhile, Alex McLeish will likely stick with the side that won on Saturday night. Things are looking better for the Dark Blues, but this will be a real test.

Serbia vs. Lithuania

Tuesday, 20 November, 19:45

To make sure of their place at the top of their Nations League group, Serbia need a win over Lithuania. It’s top versus bottom and Serbia come into this match having maintained an unbeaten record up to this point.

Lithuania lost 3–0 away from home to Romania last time out and there is a sense that they are out of their depth at this level. Lithuania are already relegated and so there’s a chance that they will use this game to give their fringe figures some game time.

The nature of group stage football at this stage, with some teams playing for qualification and some other teams playing for nothing, can warp results. However, there’s enough in this final round of Nations League group fixtures to base a solid enough ACCA from.
