The Carabao Cup gives Tottenham a great chance this season to end their long run without a trophy, following their victory over West Ham.
They have a tough draw in the next round as they will face Arsenal in a North London derby, but I’m sure they will fancy their chances of progressing.
Mauricio Pochettino made ten changes to the side which faced Manchester City on Monday night, but they were deserved winners at the London Stadium on Wednesday, particularly as pressure is obviously on the manager to deliver some kind of silverware this season.
There are only so many teams that can win a trophy each season, but when you look over the years, all the big clubs have won a League Cup or a FA Cup first before going on to bigger things.
You can say that for Manchester United back in the early days of Sir Alex Ferguson. It was the same when Jose Mourinho came into Old Trafford, while before their more recent dominance, Manchester City had Cup success.
A lot of credit has to go to Spurs, as things have not been perfect for them so far this season. A number of their top players including Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen have been out injured.
Harry Kane has yet to hit top form and then there are all the issues they have had with their new stadium, yet up until last week, they’d had their best start to a Premier League campaign.
When you look at the budget they spend on their team, it’s incredible they finish where they do every season.
However, even allowing for all of these factors, they are no different to any other big club, they want and need to win a trophy to silence their critics.
Following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui on Monday, there has been plenty of talk about Pochettino replacing him as Real Madrid manager.
If Real are interested, he will know by now, and they will come and get him.
The manager has played a huge part in Dele Alli and Harry Kane signing new contracts at Spurs, and it must be a worry for Tottenham fans that Real will come knocking. Very few people – players or managers – say no to the Spanish giants.
Liverpool visit will show how far Emery has come
Arsenal have a great chance this weekend to prove things have really changed at the Emirates, when they take on Liverpool.
They had a tough start to this campaign, losing to Manchester City and Chelsea, but since then they have been on an incredible run in the League, while they are also going along nicely in Europe and the Carabao Cup.
This is a big test but if they can come through it, it will prove they are here to stay under Unai Emery.
Liverpool are favourites to win the game and that doesn’t surprise me as they have been very impressive this season. They have scored lots of goals and just as importantly, have looked strong defensively.
We are ten games into the season now, and so we have seen enough to form a strong opinion on who we think will be there at the top of the table come the end of the season.
With three teams still unbeaten, we should be in for an interesting campaign, but I have not changed my mind in that I still think Man City will win the League, but Liverpool should push them all the way.
Some people are questioning whether Mo Salah is performing as well as he did last season and it was always going to be a challenge to replicate the highs he reached last year, but importantly for Liverpool, the front three are spreading out the goals and not just relying on Salah.
They also have Daniel Sturridge coming off the bench and scoring goals again so they have so many attacking threats, and with a new ‘keeper settled in, there are no obvious weaknesses.
Leicester owner will never be forgotten
It was a huge shock to everyone what happened at Leicester last weekend. The owner was a great example of how to successfully run a football club.
He did not just invest in the team on the pitch but also the community, and the city of Leicester as a whole.
The outpouring of grief that followed this tragic event showed how highly Mr Srivaddhanaprabha was regarded by Leicester fans.
His ownership provided the greatest shock in football in this country when Leicester won the Premier League title, one that will never be repeated, and he will forever be remembered for being part of that remarkable story.
