Race Overview – BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase (4:00 Cheltenham)

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the premier two-mile chase of the National Hunt season and one of the highlights of the Cheltenham Festival.

Run over the minimum trip on the Old Course, the race demands exceptional speed, flawless jumping and the ability to travel strongly at a relentless pace. It regularly produces thrilling finishes and often features the very best two-mile chasers in training.

The 2026 renewal looks dominated by the Irish contingent, with Willie Mullins, Henry De Bromhead, and Gordon Elliott all represented by strong contenders.

At the head of the market is Majborough, who arrives as one of the most exciting two-mile chasers in training following an impressive victory in the Dublin Chase. However, L’Eau du Sud has strong course form and could provide the main challenge after his dominant win in the Shloer Chase earlier in the season.

Several others including Il Etait Temps, Irish Panther, and Quilixios also bring solid Grade 1 form into the race, ensuring another high-quality edition of this championship contest.

⭐ Main Selection – Majborough

Majborough looks the outstanding horse in the field and is a worthy favourite for the Champion Chase.

Trained by Willie Mullins, the six-year-old was widely considered unlucky not to win last season’s Arkle Trophy, where jumping errors cost him victory despite travelling strongly for much of the race.

He has since developed into an elite two-mile chaser and produced a superb performance when winning the Dublin Chase, displaying both speed and excellent jumping.

If he avoids mistakes around Cheltenham’s demanding fences, Majborough possesses the class to dominate this race.

⚠️ Main Danger – L’Eau du Sud

The biggest threat could come from L’Eau du Sud, trained by Dan Skelton.

The eight-year-old produced a brilliant display when winning the Shloer Chase over this course and distance earlier in the season, proving he handles the Cheltenham track extremely well.

He has continued to progress over fences and arrives here relatively fresh, which could be a significant advantage in such a high-tempo race.

If Majborough underperforms or makes errors, L’Eau du Sud could be the one ready to capitalise.

💰 Value Bet – Irish Panther

Irish Panther represents an interesting value option.

The nine-year-old ran an excellent race when finishing second in a Grade 1 novice chase at Leopardstown and still appears capable of further improvement.

He may not have the same level of experience as some rivals in championship races, but his recent form suggests he has the ability to run well at this level.

If the race develops into a stamina test up the Cheltenham hill, Irish Panther could be staying on strongly.

🐎 Dark Horse – Il Etait Temps

Il Etait Temps cannot be ignored despite falling on his latest start.

The Willie Mullins-trained runner has produced several high-class performances over fences and holds a rating that puts him firmly in contention.

While he has yet to enjoy much success at the Cheltenham Festival, his raw ability means he could easily outrun his odds if producing a clear round.

Other Contenders

Quilixios
A Grade 1 performer who was travelling well before falling in this race last year. If returning to his best, he could be competitive.

Found A Fifty
Possesses plenty of ability but weakened late in last year’s renewal and must prove he can stay competitive at this level.

Captain Guinness
A former Champion Chase winner but appears to be on the decline and may struggle against younger rivals.

Predicted Finishing Order

  1. Majborough
  2. L’Eau du Sud
  3. Irish Panther
  4. Il Etait Temps

Final Verdict

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is always one of the most exciting races of the Cheltenham Festival and the 2026 renewal looks another high-quality contest.

While several talented rivals line up, Majborough appears to be the standout performer in the field.

If he produces a clean round of jumping, his speed and class could prove decisive in the 4:00 at Cheltenham.

Best Bets Summary

WIN: Majborough
EACH WAY: Irish Panther
DANGER: L’Eau du Sud
