Race Preview
A strong Class 2 handicap over 1m2f at York where several arrive with solid credentials. Course form, fitness and whether runners are still ahead of the handicapper could prove decisive in a race full of experienced handicappers and progressive types.
Why Warrant Holder Stands Out
Warrant Holder makes plenty of appeal returning from a break after an impressive end to last season, winning with authority and shaping like a horse capable of progressing beyond handicap company.
The lightly raced Gosden 4yo still has upside, William Buick takes the ride, and the step into this grade looks manageable for a horse who may still be improving.
While absence is a minor question, his profile suggests he could simply be better than this mark.
Main Danger
Per Contra is very interesting back over a trip that suits and could be underestimated in the market.
He was a neck second over C&D last August, and his latest Musselburgh run can be upgraded after not getting the clearest passage. Returning to York and stepping back up in trip could easily spark a much better effort.
Value Play
Thunder Run is hard to ignore at the prices given his excellent York record, including victory in this race last year off the same mark.
His comeback run wasn’t overly inspiring, but K R Burke’s runner is proven over C&D and could strip fitter second time out. If bouncing back, he looks capable of outrunning his odds.
Others Worth Considering
Tony Montana – runner-up in this race last year and now back on the same mark
Have Secret – arrives in form after a Pontefract win and was third in this contest last season
Regal Ulixes – lightly raced and still open to further progress for a strong yard
Ashnak – shaped at Ripon like this shorter trip could suit better
Betting Angles

Main Danger: Per Contra ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Value Play: Thunder Run ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Verdict
Warrant Holder looks the type to improve further this season and may prove better than a mark of 100. Per Contra appeals as the main threat back under ideal conditions, while Thunder Run makes strong each-way appeal given his proven York form and previous success in this race.
