The French Open has had the habit of throwing up unusual winners as far as the ladies’ category goes.

Iga Swiatek

World No.9 Iga Swiatek is the favourite to bag the title once again at the Roland Garros at odds of 11/4 (SkyBet). The 19-year-old Pole beat Sofia Kenin of the USA 6–4, 6–1 to take the title in 2020.

Now Swiatek finds herself in killing form as she enters the Roland Garros on the back of a crushing 6-0, 6-0 win over Karolína Pliskova of Czech Republic in the finals of the Italian open just two weeks ago.

With a stunning win-loss ratio of 10-1, she's the bookmakers’ favourite to take the trophy for a second successive time.

Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty of Australia by virtue of being the World No.1 is the next favourite at odds of 5/1 (SkyBet).

Apart from having found success at the Roland Garros in 2019 when she took her only Grand Slam title, the 25-year-old's record at Paris do not make good reading with a 9-5 win-loss ratio.

Aryna Sabalenka

Current World 4 on ATP rankings, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, is the third favourite at odds of 7/1.

But her career seems to be on a slightly downward curve after she made it to the quarter-finals in three successive Grand Slam tournaments in the 2016-17 period when she attained the No.1 ATP spot.

She is a superb doubles player having won titles in 2019 and 2021 in the US Open and Australian Open respectively.

Her win-loss ratio at Roland Garros is 3-3 which makes her 3rd best choice of the bookies, a bit surprising.

Simona Halep

World No.3 Simona Halep of Romania, in fact, has a better win-loss ratio of 31-10 which translates to a 76 per cent success figure which is next best to Swiatek at the Roland Garros.

The 29-year-old winner of two Grand Slams – the French Open in 2018 and the Wimbledon 2019 – could go all the way despite her under-rated odds of 11/1.

Naomi Osaka

At 23-year, Japanese-American Naomi Osaka, is already a sensation in world tennis.

The ATP No.2 has already bagged four Grand Slam titles, the last one coming in as recently as in January this year in the Australian Open.

Like many great players of multiple surfaces, Osaka hasn't been comfortable on clay surfaces and made three successive 3rd round exits at the Roland Garros. Which is why she has been given odds of 14/1.

Serena Williams

At age 39, American and tennis legend Serena Williams is the only one of the contestants in 2021 to have won the French Open twice in the last decade in 2013 and 2015.

But Williams's form at the Roland Garros has slipped.

After making it to the finals in 2016 a year after her title-winning effort in 2015, she has not managed to go beyond the 4th round from her next four seasons at Paris.
Quite understandably, the bookmakers have apportioned the great lady odds of 20/1 to take the title. But never rule out a champion and winner of 23 Grand Slam titles however aging she may be.
