Super League Betting Tips – August 2

Stick with fine margins to make it pay

Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos
Friday August 2, 19:45 BST
Live on Sky Sports Arena

Just six rounds remain in the regular Super League season and, depending on who you support, the relegation battle is as exciting/nerve-wracking as it gets, with five sides sitting at the wrong end of the table on sixteen and eighteen points.

Huddersfield and Leeds haven't been out of the bottom four all year and things could be tense in Friday's televised clash. The visitors get a two-point start on the handicap but a better wager is for either side to prevail by a margin of no more than eight points at 6/5.

Games at the John Smith's Stadium have been tight and this bet would have copped six times in the last seven matches at the home of the Giants, most recently when they went down 32-28 to Catalans three weeks ago.

Leeds were on the wrong end of another close result themselves in their last match when edged out 26-24 by Hull at Headingley and it's hard to see them running away with things as they did when they beat Simon Woolford's side 38-18 at home in April having been 30-0 up at half-time.

It's a landmark night for the star wingers from both sides, with Jermaine McGillvary set for his 300th start, while Ash Handley will pull on the Leeds shirt for the 100th time.

Departing Holbrook set for another big win on home turf

St Helens v Wakefield Trinity
Friday August 2, 19:45 BST

While all looks set fair for a closely-fought encounter at Huddersfield it could be a whole different story in the other Friday fixture, with another big win on the cards for St Helens.

The runaway leaders were rocked by the news this week that coach Justin Holbrook will be returning to the NRL for the 2020 campaign. He's been a revelation in his two and a half years on Merseyside and in the last two seasons has led the boys in the red vee to a phenomenal 46 wins in 53 matches and counting.

Saints look well placed to give him a happy send off having reached the Challenge Cup Final for the first time in eleven years with a hard-fought 26-2 win over Halifax on Saturday, while they could be confirmed as the League Shield winners again as soon as Saturday night.

They are asked to give up 18 points on the handicap and have covered that 8 times in their 12 home games this season, including when demolishing Wakefield 48-10 in the Challenge Cup Quarter Finals.

You suspect the week off for Chris Chester's Trinity was a blessing for them more than most but they couldn't have asked for a tougher return. They've won just once since the middle of May and have shipped over 40 points in 5 of their last 6 games on the road, including in that aforementioned match against their race-fit opponents at the start of June.
