A broken blood vessel scuppered the gelding’s chances in Australia, but Charlton has now nursed Withhold back to his very best form.

On his return this year he hammered a strong field at Newbury last month. He is paying the price for that success as the handicapper has put him up 6lb.

However, he might be burdened with top weight but only has to give 9lb to the bottom weight – The Grand Visar.

Charlton has made no secret that he feels the six-year-old is capable of staking his claim in Group One Cup races.

King’s Advice, winner of eight races this season, is a worthy favourite but he came up short in this year’s Northumberland Plate, the race Withhold won with a ton in hand last season.

Michael Stoute did not have the rub of the green when Crystal Ocean was chinned by Japan in Wednesday’s Juddmonte but looks to have the answer in the Strensall Stakes with ZAAKI (1.50).

He failed by a nose to catch Beat The Bank on his penultimate run at Ascot and a repeat will see him land this prize.

The progressive FIRST IN LINE (2.25) can take this handicap before stepping up to Group company.

Following a respectable run in the 2,000 Guineas, when sixth behind Magna Grecia, SHINE SO BRIGHT (3.00) can make a winning return.

At Goodwood PROMISSORY (3.50, nap) appeals as the best bet of the day.

She improved from her debut run, when third to the talented Terebellum at Goodwood, to win impressively at Doncaster.

Interestingly, she has an entry in the St Leger.

SKARDU (2.05, treble), third in the English and fourth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, has the class to take this.
