The colt’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute has made a flying start to the new Flat season with six winners from his last 22 runners in the past 14 days, so Mokammal can be backed with some confidence, especially as he showed plenty of promise on his sole run last term.

That was at Leicester where he was beaten two lengths into second by Estihdaaf when starting an unfancied 16-1 shot. He’s sure to improve for that initial outing and the opposition, best of whom could be Sweet Celebration, isn’t all that formidable.

Switching to Newcastle, ARCHIVE (nb, 3.20) can take the extended mile-and-a-half handicap for Brian Ellison – and in the process notch up a hat-trick.

Archive has won twice for jockey Ben Robinson, who is again inn the plate after wins at Pontefract and Beverley.

The nine-year-old may have most to fear from Momtalik and Lopes Dancer.

Also at Newcastle, BOWMAN (treble, 4.25) looks worth a punt.

The top weight won twice in 2017, but was off for 489 days before coming back with a very respectable effort at Nottingham earlier this month when third behind Rise Hall. He can build on that effort.

Gurkha Friend and Trevithick are the main dangers.
