The eight-year-old is now in his third spell with trainer John Butler for whom he has scored on five occasions.
He returned to Butler from Paul D’Arcy’s yard recently and his first run back was a winning one at Lingfield, where he scored by two-and-a-quarter lengths from Upavon. His next run was a commendable second – beaten only a head – behind Poetic Force, showing he remains in great heart.
Joint top-weight Ultimate Avenue should make a race of it with the selection despite not having troubled the judge since his two-year-old days in 2016.
But he has been running fairly well and has dropped down the weights from 100 to a more workable mark of 87 for today’s assignment.
Waqaas is another who should go well on his second run since joining Mark Usher from Jamie Osborne’s stable.
Staying at the Essex all-weather track, KIMBLEWICK (nb, 2.30) can follow up her Kempton win by landing the Toesport.com Novice Stakes for trainer John Gosden.
Robert Havlin, who only returned to the saddle after two months out through injury at Kempton last night, rode the filly to that Kempton victory and is again in the saddle. He should gain a welcome winner to boost his comeback campaign.
Kimblewick looked a decent prospect at Kempton and won in fairly good style despite running very green. She should be much more street-wise this afternoon and can defy a penalty here before going on to better things.
Biggest danger is the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Derevo, who also ran well on her only juvenile outing, finishing runner-up behind Ernest Aldrich at Doncaster. Ryan Moore takes the ride.
At Newcastle, DISTANT MIRAGE (treble, 6.30) can be backed in the Ladbrokes Handicap. James Tate’s runner, who will be partnered by Jamie Spencer for the first time, has been beaten twice since scoring at Kempton in February, but has been far from disgraced on either occasion.
He is trying seven furlongs for the first time, but that should be well within his compass judged on his breeding.
James Bethell’s Rich Approach has recent form figures of 4-1-3-1 and must be on the shortlist. He was a winner on his only run over today’s trip.
