Goodwood Day 2 Preview – Frankie To Be Too Darn Hot In The Sussex
The second day of Glorious Goodwood sees popular dual-purpose performer Lil’ Rockerfeller bid for back to back victories in the opening handicap. Elsewhere on the card Too Darn Hot bids to back up his recent victory in France but faces stiff opposition from seasoned campaigners. Wesley Ward unleashes another speedy two-year-old on Brittish soil in the Molecomb.
Goodwood Stayers’ Handicap
Lil’ Rockerfeller was an ultra-impressive winner of this contest twelve months ago when he easily came home fifteen lengths clear of his closest rival. Neil King’s stable star got slapped with seventeen pounds for that victory but if in similar form on seasonal return he may be able to land back to back victories.
Northumberland plate runner-up Dubawi Fifty was just agonisingly nailed late on at Newcastle but should come on for the run. He only got two-pounds for that run and is my idea of the winner.
Timoshenko won all five starts last season starting off life with a mark of just 58 and runs off 81 now. He’s a typical Sir Mark Prescott improver and there could be lots more to come from him.
Irish-raider Party Playboy was just caught over shorter recently and off a higher mark in a better class race, I think he’ll struggle.
Selection: Dubawi Fifty
There are a host of unexposed improving three-year-olds heading to post for this valuable handicap and there has been none more progressive than Sir Ron Priestley. Mark Johnston’s charge put a disappointing Royal run behind him at Haydock and is the one to beat.
I don’t think we have seen the best of the well-bred Kosciuszko who came up against the smart Beatboxer on debut and having won on his next start, he only came up short at Newbury. The extra yardage looks sure to suit and is the each-way play in the race.
Aidan O’Brien’s runners can never be underestimated and his Eminence ran his best race at this trip in the King George V Stakes at the Royal meeting, when he finished a close third. A mark of 95 looks very manageable and don’t underestimate him.
We all know that Wesley Ward has made a name for himself with two-year-olds. He’s represented by the smart Maven who has won in America and France on both starts to date.
The booking of Ryan Moore aboard Hand On My Heart is very taking. Clive Cox’s filly won well at Windsor and could be anything.
Of the outsiders, French raider Fan Club Rules represents the Royal Ascot winning trainer Matthieu Paussiere. He’s finished fourth in a brace of Group races on his last two starts and might sneak into the places.
Selection: Hand On My Heart – E/W
Last seasons champion two-year-old Too Darn Hot has had a mixed season and as John Gosden has admitted it’s probably his fault. He seemed to get things back on track in the Prix Jean Prat and must go well. However, he’s got a length to find with Circus Maximus on their St James’s Palace run. Aidan’s runner was a non-stayer in the derby and could be a force to be reckoned with over the mile.
Lord Glitters has proved to be a very shrewd acquisition by connections and was third in this race last year. He won the Queen Anne already this season and shouldn’t be underestimated.
Of the remainder, Phoneix Of Spain made all to beat Too Darn Hot in the Irish 2000 Guineas but was slightly disappointing at Ascot where he looked outclassed.
Selection: Circus Maximus
