Aidan O’Brien Stable Tour 2019

The Ballydoyle assembly line is rolling into action as the
season gathers momentum, with the Guineas meeting at Newmarket once again
providing the first significant fixture for Aidan O’Brien’s powerful team of
approximately 200 horses.
Already the most successful trainer in the history of the
Qipco 2,000 Guineas, O’Brien will be bidding for a tenth victory in the first
Classic of the season with Ten Sovereigns, unbeaten in three starts last year,
and Magna Grecia his main candidates for next month’s race.
Magna Grecia has already won over a mile at Group 1 level
whereas Ten Sovereigns will be having his stamina tested having been unbeaten
in three starts over six furlongs last year.
“We might run a few others in the Guineas but it looks
as if Ten Sovereigns and Magna Grecia will be our main contenders. They are
pleasing us and we’re very hopeful that Ten Sovereigns will get the mile,”
O’Brien said.
Hermosa, Just Wonderful and Fairyland, who like Ten
Sovereigns is untried beyond six furlongs, are all being aimed at the Qipco
1,000 Guineas.
Victory in the Investec Derby on June 1 would see O’Brien
equal the race record of seven wins achieved by three trainers of the distant
past.
O’Brien said: “We have a number of possible Derby types
who showed ability last year including Japan, Broome, who was a good winner of
the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown recently, Anthony Van Dyck and Mount
Everest. We’ll be splitting them up in the different trial races and the
picture will become clearer in the coming weeks.”
A team of older horses include St Leger winner Kew Gardens,
Capri, who is being aimed at the Ascot Gold Cup, and Irish St Leger winner Flag
Of Honour, giving Ballydoyle a strong hand in the staying division while the
Group 1 winning filly Magical, who put it up to Enable in the Breeders’ Cup
Turf last year and who started her season in the Alleged Stakes at Naas on
Saturday, is back for another campaign.

Amedeo Modigliani
Four-year-old colt
Galileo (sire) – Gooseberry Fool (dam)
Owner: Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
Form figures: 31/34
Racing Post Rating 96; Official rating 96
He missed all of last season due to a setback early in the year. He was almost ready to run towards the back-end but we decided to wait. He’s had two runs and ran a nice race at Leopardstown last time. He’s a colt with plenty of pace and will probably be kept to one mile races. He appreciates good or quicker ground and should progress.
Capri
5h Galileo – Dialafara
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
0/15540-
RPR 121 OR 120
He’s in good form and we’re going to train him for the Ascot Gold Cup. He’ll probably start off in the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan on April 28 and we expect that he’ll improve a lot from the run.
Cypress Creek
4c Galileo – Dialafara
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
143616-
RPR 113 OR 108
A brother of Capri, he won the Group 3 Loughbrown Stakes over two miles at Naas last season and will be aimed at long distance races again this year. He has done well since last year.
Flag Of Honour
4c Galileo – Hawala
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
11145-2
RPR 116 OR 117
He did well last year winning a Group 2 and a Group 3 over a mile and six furlongs before landing the Irish St Leger and we’re looking forward to a good campaign with him. He started off in the Alleged Stakes over a mile and a quarter at Naas on Saturday and performed well when second to Magical. We’ll be sending him back up in trip and he can be effective over 1m4f as well over the longer trips he did so well over last year.
Hunting Horn
4c Camelot – Mora Bai
Mrs J Magnier/ M Tabor/D Smith
208-334
RPR 116 OR 111
He’s done plenty of travelling already this year, running well in the US and Qatar before finishing fourth in the Sheema Classic last month. He’s a solid Group class colt who will be campaigned over a 1m2f and 1m4f. His next race might be the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket next month.
I Can Fly
4f Fastnet Rock – Madonna Dell’Orto
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
1420-10
RPR 117 OR 116
She was disappointing at Meydan last month but we’re happy to put a line through that run as she didn’t travel over there that well and ran flat. She should leave that run well behind her and she showed last season that she is well capable of competing at a high level at around a mile.
Star quality
Kew Gardens
4c Galileo – Chelsea Rose
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
911317-
RPR 121 OR 120
The Coronation Cup is his first main target and he might start off in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester. He did well last year, winning a couple of Group 1s and ran a good race in the Arc after his victory in the St Leger. He’s a lovely good-natured colt and has done very well physically since last season.
Le Brivido
5h Siyoumi – La Bugatty
Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Al Saud & M Tabor
1/121/6-3
RPR 118 OR 117
He showed plenty of ability for Andre Fabre, finishing
second in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and winning the Jersey Stakes. He ran
only once last season and joined us over the winter. He started off in the
Gladness Stakes over 7f at Naas on Saturday and ran a very nice race to
finish third. We wanted him to relax and he finished off the race well. The
Lockinge might be next for him.
Lost Treasure
4c War Front – Wading
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
15237-0
RPR 111 OR 112
He has done all his racing over 5-6f and we’re thinking of trying him over
7f as it might suit his style of racing. We think he will improve a lot on his
run in the Al Quoz Sprint last month.
Magical
4f Galileo – Halfway To Heaven
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
14012-1
RPR 121 OR 122
She did very well in Group 1s over1m4f last year, winning the Fillies & Mares at Ascot before running Enable to three-quarters of a length in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. She wintered well and we’ve been very happy with her, more so than at this stage of the season in previous years. We were delighted with her performance in the Alleged Stakes at Naas on Saturday, when she won impressively. The Prix Ganay or the Mooresbridge Stakes will be next for her followed by the Tattersalls Gold Cup after which we’ll review things. She’s shown herself to be versatile in terms of distance and she might have a mid-season break before being trained for an autumn campaign, which brought out the best in her last season.
Magic Wand
4f Galileo – Prudenzia
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
5224-25
RPR 114 OR 113
She started off the year by finishing second in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational and we were happy enough with her run in Meydan last month. She won the Cheshire Oaks and the Ribblesdale last year and also performed very well in Group 1s. She’ll again be campaigned over 1m2f and 1m4f, and fast ground and a strong pace suit her well.
Southern France
4c Galileo – Alta Anna
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
112437-
RPR 112 OR 107
Last season was his first and he showed that he had the makings of a good class stayer, winning twice and finishing third behind Kew Gardens in the St Leger. He has done very well since last year and will be running in some of the good staying races. He might start off in the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan on April 28.
St Patrick’s Day
4c Pioneerof The Nile – Littleprincessemma
Mrs J Magnier
/358020-
RPR 106 OR 102
He failed to win last year and we probably didn’t give him enough time to settle in after he came to us from the US for last season. We think he’ll do better this year. He’s in good form and we’ll be concentrating on 5f and 6f races for him.
Three-year-olds
Antilles
c War Front-Wonder Of Wonders
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/Flaxman Stables
0551-2
RPR 108 OR 87
He won a 7f nursery at Naas and has done well over the winter. He started off at Chelmsford on Thursday when he was a good second over a mile. We’re not sure what direction we’ll go with him but it was an encouraging run and we expect him to improve as the season goes on.
Anthony Van Dyck
c Galileo – Believe ‘N’ Succeed
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
111239-
RPR 118 OR 118
He was a very solid performer last year when he won a Group 2 and a Group 3 over 7f, and was placed in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst. We’re happy with how he has done since last season. He’ll start off in either the 2,000 Guineas or a Derby Trial, which is probably more likely. We’ve always thought that he will be suited by going middle distances.
Barbados
c Galileo – Sumora
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
6-2
RPR 80
A brother of Maybe, he ran quite well in a maiden at the Curragh on his only outing last year and started off well at Naas on Saturday when beaten only a short-head in a maiden over 1m2f. He should improve from the run and will go for another maiden. He should stay a bit further.
Blenheim Palace
c Galileo – Meow
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
074-8
RPR 71 OR 76
He started off in a handicap over 1m2f at Leopardstown. We haven’t seen the best of him yet and I’d expect him to improve as the season goes on. A mile and a quarter on nice ground should suit him.
Star quality
Broome
c Australia – Sweepstake
M Tabor/D Smith/ Mrs J Magnier
51622-1
RPR 115 OR 112
He ran second in a Group 2 at Leopardstown in September before losing out narrowly in the Prix Jean Luc-Lagardere. We were delighted with his performance in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown when he came from behind to win going away by eight lengths. He has done very well since last season and we’ve always thought that middle distances would suit him well. The plan is for him to go back to Leopardstown for the Derrinstown Derby Trial next month.
Cape Of Good Hope
c Galileo – Hveger
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
74123-
RPR 105 OR 106
After winning his maiden at Tipperary he was placed in both the Superlative Stakes and the Royal Lodge in which he was a bit disappointing. We haven’t seen the best of him yet and he’ll go for a Derby trial somewhere. He’s a brother of Highland Reel and Idaho, so he’ll be one for middle distances.
Dark horse
Chablis
f Galileo – Vadawina
Mrs J Magnier & John C Oxley
1-
RPR 83
She won a 7f maiden at Gowran Park nicely on her only start. She has done very well and we’re looking forward to starting her off, probably in an Oaks trial.
Circus Maximus
c Galileo – Duntle
Flaxman Stables/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
5134-
RPR 112 OR 110
He won his maiden over a mile before finishing in the frame in a Group 3 at Newmarket and in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity at Doncaster. We’re very happy with him. He has done well and is in full work. He might start off in the 2,000 Guineas or, if not, in a Derby trial.
Constantinople
c Galileo – One Moment In Time
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
531-2
RPR 101 OR 97
A brother of Bondi Beach, he won a mile maiden at Thurles and finished well when a short head second in a handicap over 1m2f at Cork on his return last week. He should get 1m4f, and probably further, and we think he will progress through the season.
Coral Beach
f Zoffany – Abbasharjah
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
603151-
RPR 102 OR 102
She had a busy campaign last season and it took a long time for her to win. We always thought she was better than she ran and she came good on her eleventh start in a maiden at Cork before finishing the season with a Group 3 win over 7f at Leopardstown. She likes to be covered up and she might go for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.
Credenza
f Galileo – Bye Bye Birdie
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
073313-
RPR 95 OR 96
She won a nursery over 1m½f at Cork and was also placed at Listed level. I’m not sure where she will start off but it might be in one of the Oaks trials.
Delphinia
f Galileo – Again
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
071-6
RPR 85 OR 91
She was a bit disappointing on her reappearance in a Group 3 over a mile at Naas last month but she is better than she ran there and we think there will be improvement when she steps up a bit in distance. She won her maiden at Galway in October and is a nice type.
Dunkirk Harbour
c Declaration Of War – Goodness Gray
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
07-3
RPR 68
He ran quite well when third on his reappearance over a mile at Navan last month. He should improve and be able to win a maiden.
Raceform Interactive stat
Aidan O’Brien is well known for his Pattern-race exploits
but he’s equally effective, and more importantly profitable, in handicaps.
Since the start of 2017, he’s run 52 horses between 5f and 7f in that company,
which has seen 14 wins, making it a strike-rate of 27%. The profit to a £1
stake is a tasty £46.33
Eminence
c Sea The Stars – Coolree Marj
D Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor
486-1
RPR 90 OR 77
We liked him last year although his work was always better
than what he produced on the track. We were delighted with him when he was a
decisive winner of a handicap over a mile and a quarter at Leopardstown.
He should improve and do well over middle distances.
Enticed
f Galileo – Dialafara
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
06-
RPR 68
A sister of Capri, we think she’ll leave her two ordinary runs last season behind her and that she will become a black type filly going middle distances.
Fairyland
f Kodiac – Queenofthefairies
Mrs EM Stockwell/M Tabor/D Smith
11311-
RPR 112 OR 112
She won the Lowther and the Cheveley Park, and the plan is to send her straight to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas. We’re happy with how she has done since last year. She has never gone further than 6f and Newmarket will tell us whether she has a future over a mile or will go back sprinting. She is a filly who has always shown a lot of pace.
Fantasy
f Invincible Spirit – Cassandra Go
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
3808-0
RPR 91 OR 89
She was disappointing on her return at Navan but she is a fast filly who was placed at Group 3 and Listed level last year – 5f is probably her ideal trip.
Fire Fly
f Galileo – Massarra
M Tabor/D Smith/ Mrs J Magnier
46521-0
RPR 84 OR 89
A sister to Gustav Klimt, Mars and Wonderfully, she’s a nice filly who should improve a good bit from her first run of the season at Leopardstown. She’ll probably go back there for the Derrinstown 1,000 Guineas Trial next month when stepping up to a mile should suit her.
Fleeting
f Zoffany – Azafata
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
1731-
RPR 107 OR 101
She won the May Hill Stakes on her final start last season and has done well over the winter. She might go for one of the 1,000 Guineas or start off in an Oaks trial.

f Galileo – Hawala
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
8-0
RPR 67
She was a bit disappointing on her first start of the season over just short of a mile and a quarter at Gowran Park last Tuesday. She’s a sister of last year’s Irish St Leger winner Flag Of Honour so she should stay a mile and a half if not further.
Fresno
c Galileo – Moonlight Cloud
G Strawbridge/ Mrs J Magnier/ M Tabor/ D Smith

He didn’t show much on his only start last year. He’s ready to start off in a maiden and should get 1m4f and, hopefully, will progress as the season goes on.
Frosty
f Galileo – Laddies Poker Two
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
17-
RPR 84
She’s a sister of Winter who won four Group 1s for us a couple of years ago. She won first-time out at Dundalk before running quite green when she went to Newmarket for the Oh So Sharp Stakes. She might go for an Oaks trial or, if not, she’ll have a run somewhere before going to Royal Ascot where the Ribblesdale might be the race for her.
Gentile Bellini
c Dubawi – Sky Lantern
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
42-
RPR 83
A fine, big colt who will handle ease, he ran well over a mile on his two starts last season. We think he’ll get further this year.
Goddess
f Camelot – Cherry Hinton
Mrs J Magnier/John G Sikura
916-
RPR 96 OR 94
She’s a sister of Athena who won a Grade 1 for us in the US last year. She was impressive winning her maiden by ten lengths at Leopardstown in July before disappointing in a Group 3 at the same track two weeks later. She was sick after that run and didn’t race again. She’s not long back in training and might not be ready for the Classics. We’ll probably aim for Royal Ascot for either the Coronation or the Ribblesdale.
Gossamer Wings
f Scat Daddy – Lavender Baby
M Tabor/D Smith/Mrs J Magnier
124235-
RPR 105 OR 106
A fast filly who was beaten a short head in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. She also ran well in the Flying Childers and the Cheveley Park. We might try her over 7f, but I’d imagine 5f or 6f will suit her best.

f War Front – Alexandrova
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith
841- 2
RPR 101 OR 101
She won a 7f maiden at Leopardstown late last season and we were very pleased with her run back there last week when she finished well for second in the 1,000 Guineas Trial. Stepping her up to a mile or 1m2f should suit.
Harpo Marx
c Galileo – Nechita
Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/D Smith

RPR 62
He lost ground at the start in both his races and we think he’ll improve when he steps up to middle distances and progress through the season.
Hermosa
f Galileo – Beauty Is Truth
Mrs J Magnier/D Smith/M Tabor
163122-
RPR 111 OR 110
She has done very well and we’re very happy with her. She showed plenty of ability at two, winning a Group 3 and being placed in three Group 1s – the Moyglare, the Fillies Mile and the Criterium International. She will go straight to Newmarket for the 1,000 Guineas and then we’ll look at the Irish Guineas. Going further than a mile shouldn’t be a problem.

0591-0
RPR 79 OR 78

She was Group 3 placed last year and ran a very nice race when fifth in another Group 3 at Leopardstown on her return. Both races were over seven furlongs and we think going up in trip will suit her. Her dam won the Irish Oaks and a mile and a quarter might suit her.

Her form last season was solid. She won a Group 3 over six furlongs and was placed in the Phoenix Stakes, the Cheveley Park and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. We decided to try her over 7f in the Fred Darling at Newbury on Saturday and were very pleased with her run. She was beaten only two short-heads, so we’ll have to decide whether to try her again over the trip, try her over a mile or drop her back in distance.

He was quite consistent last year without managing to win and was unlucky to be brought down after going three furlongs on his reappearance in a 1m2f handicap at Leopardstown. He came good at Naas on Saturday when winning a maiden over 1m2f and Donnacha [O’Brien] thinks he might get 1m4f.

He ran a very good race when second in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown and should progress from it. He handles ease and will get1m4f. He’ll probably go for one of the Derby trials.

He got a bit tired in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown and we expect him to come on well from the run and leave that form behind him. He was beaten narrowly in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud over a mile and a quarter on his final start last year and middle distances will suit him well.

He did very well last year, winning a maiden, a Group 3 and then the Group 1 Middle Park all in the space of five weeks. He has never raced beyond 6f but 7f should be well within his grasp and and he hasn’t shown us anything to suggest he won’t get a mile. He’s done very well physically and has been doing everything right.
The 2,000 Guineas is the plan and we’re hopeful that his style of racing – he is quick to get going, then relaxes before staying on – will give him every chance of getting the mile. Of course, you never know until you try them at a new distance but so far he’s shown us nothing negative on that score.

He ran quite well in a 7f Listed race at Leopardstown on his return. I’d imagine we’ll probably drop him back to 6f over which he won and was also Group 1-placed last season.

A sister of Found, her two runs last year, bothover a mile, were quite ordinary. She should improve and will stay middle distances. She’ll handle easy ground.

He won his maiden over a mile at Naas and we were happy with his run in a 1m2f handicap on his reappearance at Cork last Sunday. He should come on for the experience and will stay middle distances.

He was a good second on his only start last year and won nicely over 6f at Dundalk last month. He ran at Chelmsford on Thursday when he finished fourth over a mile. He was stepping up two furlongs in trip and we were quite happy with his run. He’s still a baby and there will be better to come from him.

He missed the break from a wide draw in the UAE Derby at Meydan last month and was never able to get into a good position. His wins last season were over 6f but he ran well over a mile at Dundalk on his reappearance and we might try him over the distance again, possibly in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains.

A very straight-forward colt who ran third in a Group 1 over a mile at Doncaster on his final start last year. We were delighted with his run in a Listed race at Dundalk last month and we think he’ll improve a good bit. He goes for the Feilden Stakes over 1m1f at Newmarket and could go up in trip after that.

He won a 5f maiden at Navan in October and has done well over the winter. He’s doing everything right and will start off over 6f or 7f. I wouldn’t be sure about him getting a mile.

She won over a mile last year and also peformed well over seven furlongs in the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare. She started off over 7f in a Group 3 at Leopardstown and was a bit disappointing although finishing fourth. We haven’t decided where she’ll go next but stepping up in distance could bring about improvement. She might stay middle distances.
Two-year-olds
We were delighted with Monarch Of Egypt’s (c American
Pharoah – Up) win at Naas on Saturday. He was our first juvenile runner of the
season and we were expecting a good performance as he had been showing us
plenty.
Although he ran a bit green in front he won well and while
he shows plenty of speed, Ryan [Moore] felt he should have no problems going 6f
and further. Obviously we’ll be looking at Royal Ascot for him, but he’ll run
again before then to get more experience.
We have a big team of well-bred two-year-olds, many of whom
have yet to be named and who won’t be seen out until the middle of the season.
Of those who will be in action soon, a few who we like and
who are working well are Shadow Creek (c Gleneagles – Gotlandia) and Tango (f
No Nay Never – Idle Chatter).
Others we have entered up are Arizona (c No Nay Never – Lady
Ederle) and a few colts by War Front – King Neptune (ex Agreeable Miss),
Pistoletto (ex Lerici), Fort Myers (ex Marvellous) and Ohio State (ex Misty For
Me), and who is a half-brother to US Navy Flag and Roly Poly.

Mount Everest
When Aidan O’Brien won the Beresford Stakes in 2018, for the eighth year in a row and the 18th time since 1996, the only surprise was that the feat was achieved with Japan rather than the favourite Mount Everest who lost out by a short head. Despite that reverse, the son of Galileo and Six Perfections is arguably the most interesting Ballydoyle-trained colt of Classic age yet to win a Pattern race. He has been held in high regard since well before his debut last summer and may ultimately surpass several who accomplished more for the stable at two.
