Sugrue To Win 2019 Open Championship
It’s been eighty-nine years since an amateur won The Open Championship, but 22-year old James Sugrue from Mallow, County Cork could become the next amateur to win at the Donegal venue with BoyleSports making him a 300/1 chance to join Padraig Harrington in the Irish roll of honour.
The Mallow native secured his place in The Open Championship at Portrush next month following his Amateur Open Championship victory at Portmarnock golf course on Saturday.
With a one hole win over Scotland’s Euan Walker in a fascinating finish, Sugrue became the eighth Irishman to achieve the feat, and the first since Alan Dunbar in 2012. This victory also secures Sugrue a place in next year’s US Masters and US Open.
BoyleSports make the 249th world ranked amateur 33/1 to finish in the Top 10 and 66/1 for a Top 5 finish. Brooks Koepka is the 7/1 favourite to win the Open Championship with Rory McIlroy just in behind as the second favourite at 8/1 to win it for the second time.
Last year’s winner Francesco Molinari is 20/1 to become the first back to back winner since Padraig Harrington back in 2007 and 2008.
