“…there was enough promise in his reappearance at Windsor to suggest that he is well up to winning a race of this nature when everything falls right…”
Timeform on Broad Appeal
AL MUFFRIH – 16:10 Redcar
AL MUFFRIH shaped encouragingly when fifth on his return at Newmarket earlier this month, just far too keen to allow himself to see the race out so well as the other principals, doing well under the circumstances to sustain his run as well as he did (beaten just a length and three quarters). William Haggas' charge certainly showed enough to suggest that an opening mark of 91 won't prove beyond him in handicaps, especially if settling better in a first-time hood, and there is likely to be a few long faces if he is unable to justify his position as favourite in this valuable prize – indeed, he is one of the few in the field with the scope for more improvement, representing a yard that continues in top form, too.
IN TRUTINA – 14:25 Redcar
IN TRUTINA shaped well when second on her debut at Thirsk last month, but there was no such promise to be taken from her latest effort at Ripon, when she was never travelling at any stage (ultimately well held in sixth). It is by no means too late for her to get back on an upward curve, but she is hardly one for maximum faith at short odds here, with enough interesting sorts running for us to suggest that she is worth taking on, including the newcomer Fortamour. A half-brother to multiple winners, notably the useful pair of Simmie and Trebetherick (both won over five furlongs at two), he is certainly bred to be a precocious sort, and it will be interesting to see if the market speaks in his favour as post-time approaches.
BROAD APPEAL – 17:15 Leicester
£91.48 – Jonathan Portman's profit to a £1 level stake when having one runner at a flat meeting
BROAD APPEAL probably isn't quite as good on turf as he is on the all-weather, but his mark reflects that, and there was enough promise in his reappearance at Windsor to suggest that he is well up to winning a race of this nature when everything falls right. Indeed, he shaped better than the bare result on that occasion, racing closer to the pace than ideal in a strongly-run race and deserving credit for still being thereabouts at the finish, with the three other who completed the frame all benefiting from more patient rides. It would be no surprise if he stripped fitter with that first outing for five months under his belt, and, able to race from the same mark here, he would appear to hold sound claims of going one better, representing the Jonathan Portman yard that rarely sends just one runner to a meeting for the sake of it.
