“…he is entitled to improve for the outing…”
Timeform on Ecu de la Noverie
Ecu de la Noverie – 14:05 Kempton
Ecu de la Noverie kept on nicely to finish second on his return at Wetherby, without being able to reel in the race-fit winner. That performance was just about the best he has ever produced and, keeping in mind he is entitled to improve for the outing, it bodes well for his prospects this season. This slight step up in trip will be in his favour, he is less exposed than many of his rivals and should do better as a chaser, so his claims are clear.
Methodtothemadness – 13:55 Carlisle
The unexposed Methodtothemadness will have her supporters after registering a course-and-distance success last month, but she had the run of the race that day and hasn't been chucked in on her handicap debut. She also faces an interesting opponent in Lily's Gem, who is also making her first start in a handicap. Lily's Gem has been handed a stiff-looking mark on the face of it, having made little meaningful impact in maiden and novice company, but she was fairly useful in bumpers and won on testing ground at this course in April of last year. A five-month break, allied with the switch to handicapping, could have a positive impact and she is preferred to Methodtothemadness.
Chasamax – 12:20 Kempton
Smart Stat: 4 – Nicky Henderson's number of winners in the past ten runnings
Nicky Henderson has won this novice hurdle four times in the last ten years, and has been successful in the contest for the past two seasons. This time he relies on Chasamax, who posted an encouraging effort when finishing third on his debut under Rules in a bumper at Worcester in June. He pulled hard that day, which compromised his chances, but he still offered plenty to work on and should have gained some benefit from that first outing on a racecourse. It is interesting he is starting out over hurdles in a race in which Henderson has fared so well.
