Harry Skelton says his admiration for Richard Johnson will make it extra special if he can beat the three-time champion jockey to the title.

Skelton passed his highest total of winners in a season when his victory at Leicester on Desirable Court, who is trained by brother Dan, took him to 132 successes.

Skelton set a furious early pace in the summer and was 30 winners ahead of Johnson at one stage.

The relentless champion has cut it back to 26 and Skelton said: ‘I wish I was still 30 in front but that shows you how competitive it is and what a true sportsman Richard Johnson is. He was runner-up to AP McCoy 16 times and that shows his dedication.

‘He was patient and put in a lot of hard-working, long days. He is a person I look up to and admire. I hope I can beat him while he is still riding. That’s what he wanted to achieve when AP was riding.’

Skelton added: ‘I’m lucky to be riding for my brother, who is a very good trainer. I’m in a privileged position.’

Meanwhile, Trainer Neil King has booked Gina Andrews to ride Milansbar in the Classic Chase at Warwick on Saturday.

The 12-year-old won the race last season when ridden by Bryony Frost but Frost will be at Kempton to link up with her grade-one winning partner Black Corton for boss Paul Nicholls.
