West Ham vs Arsenal Preview
Arsenal were once associated with the number 4, there consistency in reaching Champions League football despite losing their best stars was made fun of. Oh how Arsenal would give everything to be back achieving Champions League football on a regular basis, again.
In their pursuit to Champions League Football, Arsenal are currently sitting 5th in the table with 41 points while they are only 3 points away from the 4th placed Chelsea. Arsenal are also just 3 points ahead from a resurgent Manchester United that have similar ambitions to that of Arsenals’ and sit at the 6th position with 38 points. Also an interest for the Arsenal fans are their rivals Tottenham who are 7 points ahead of Arsenal.
Up next Tottenham face Manchester United which provides a great opportunity for Arsenal to make headway on either of the two or both.
Making headway is not a very simple task for Arsenal as they are up against the Hammers who have ambitions of their own. If recent form is an indicator on anything then both sides are well matched with both winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 2 games in their last 5 matches. Arsenal will argue that they are a much better team than West Ham despite having a not so impressive form.
In the reverse fixture, back in August, Arsenal defeated West Ham at the Emirates with three goals coming from Nacho Monreal, Issa Diop and Danny Welbeck while West Ham could only score one in reply with that coming from Marko Arnatovic.
Arsenal would be betting on the form of their striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who has scored 4 goals in the last 4 games. Arsenal have recovered with a win over Fulham from a thrashing from Liverpool, who scored 5 past the gunners.
The Gunners have been unable to keep a clean sheet in their last 5 matches which will be a worry for their manager, Unai Emery.
This is something that the Hammers could look to exploit, with their solid attack, which includes players like Fellipe Anderson and Marco Arnautovic. Andy Carrol is another attacker in the West Ham ranks that always looks forward to an encounter with Arsenal.
Manuel Pellegrini, the West Ham manager is well familiar with Arsenal and he would know that this Arsenal team has too much quality and on their day can blow any team away so he will look at his defense and look to tighten things up at the back, as they simply cannot concede goals as they have been doing in the last 4 games. This is against Manuel Pellegrini’s attacking instincts as an attack minded manager but it’s necessary.
The match promises to be an exciting one because both sides involved have ambitions of their own and to achieve those ambitions they need the three points. This fixture is an early kickoff, it will be played on Saturday, 12th January at 13:30 BST. For all the attacking talent on display, it promises to be a match that a wise man would not dare to miss.
