Manchester United transfers: Jose Mourinho’s 11 signings – ranked from best to worst
With Jose Mourinho ignominiously sacked on Tuesday morning, it’s been a gleeful time for his detractors and people who dislike Manchester United.
Draw that as a Venn diagram and it would subsume the vast majority of the population, which perhaps explains the extreme schadenfreude which has accompanied his departure.
Though there were many, many failings during Mourinho’s tenure at Old Trafford, his transfer record has come in for particular criticism in the aftermath of his sacking. Having spent almost £400m in transfer fees alone across two and a half seasons, United have been left with very little to show with their recent forays into the transfer market.
Mourinho’s record signing at United, Paul Pogba, has also been one of the biggest misfits at the club, while the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Alexis Sanchez have underperformed under his guidance. Defensive recruits Victor Lindelhof and Eric Bailly have veered from passable to erratic, leaving his managerial successor – or a caretaker, as the case may be – with an enormous mess to sort out.

Meanwhile, £50m summer signing Fred has made eight appearances in the Premier League this season. Like everything else about his last few months in charge, Mourinho’s transfer strategy – aided and abetted by Ed Woodward – ceased to make any coherent sense.
With all that in mind, here’s your chance to have the final say on Mourinho’s transfer record at United.
