Liverpool injury news: The full list of players out as Jurgen Klopp reveals sickness bug

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes to his Liverpool side from the team which lost to Manchester City last week for the FA Cup third round tie against Wolves.

A lacklustre display and 2-1 defeat at Molineux has seen the manager criticised in some quarters for “disrespecting” the oldest football competition in the world – but can you blame him if he did?

At the end of a spell of 10 games in little over a month, Liverpool find themselves four points clear at the top of the Premier League table and have a very real chance of ending a 29 year title drought.

‘A lot of tough games'

“The problem was that we played a [full-strength] line-up in recent weeks in a lot of tough games,” Klopp said after the game.

“You all want this number of games, so don’t ask me if [the schedule] is right or not.”

As well as the wholesale changes made to his starting line-up, Klopp was forced to hand 16-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever his debut after just six minutes following a hamstring injury to Dejan Lovren.

His annoyance at the busy festive period is perhaps understandable given the injury problems that have begun to mount up in his squad.

Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Virgil van Dijk were all revealed to have been suffering with minor injuries while Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are long-term absentees.

Klopp also revealed after the game that several players have been suffering from a bug: “Sore throats, which you can have at this time of year.”

Meanwhile Bayern Munich, who Liverpool face in the last 16 of the Champions League, are playing no fixtures between 22 December and 18 January thanks to the Bundesliga's winter break.

Liverpool's ‘big chance'

Liverpool's situation was perhaps summed up best by former defender Jamie Carragher.

“I have no problem with the LFC selection from Jurgen Klopp,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I would rather we had won but we have the best chance we’ve had in years of winning the Premier League and it may be years before we’re in this position again.

“The big chance we have is not the four point lead but Manchester City and Tottenham playing a lot more games.”
