Super Bowl Bettors Like Patriots Over Rams, SuperBook Issues 442 Props
Super Bowl 53 betting has overwhelmingly been on the New England Patriots over the underdog Los Angeles Rams.
After point spreads opened with New England spotting Los Angeles just a point, the line has increased to as much as a field goal.
The majority of Las Vegas sportsbooks have the line at 2.5. Along with the SuperBook, that's the spread at Caesars, Wynn, MGM, and Station Casinos. Rams bettors can grab an extra half-point at online book Bovada.
SuperBook oddsmaker Jay Kornegay tweeted this week that almost 78 percent of the tickets are on the Patriots. It's even more lopsided at MGM Resorts' Mirage, as the sportsbook says 96 of the money has been on New England.
Super Bowl 53 kicks off on February 3 at 6:30 pm ET from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Oddsmakers are ready for a flurry of activity over the final week, as the majority of bets typically come in the final days leading up to the big game.
Speaking with ESPN's David Purdum, Ed Salmons, another SuperBook oddsmaker, believes the late money will be on the Rams.
A lot of us believe that the Rams are just a better team than the Patriots,” Salmons explained. “I really believe this line will come back and go more towards 1.5 and even one. I would be shocked if this game went to three and closed there.”
The Rams might be the better team against the Patriots, but they needed a gift from the football gods in the NFC Championship to beat the New Orleans Saints. One of the worst non-calls in recent memory late in the fourth quarter forced New Orleans to kick a field goal instead of having first and goal with a chance to win the game.
Saints tight end Benjamin Watson took to Twitter this week to address NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's silence on the controversy.
“Commissioner Goodell. We all realize that football is an imperfect game… What occurred last Sunday in New Orleans though, was outside of that accepted norm. Your continued silence on this matter is unbecoming of the position you hold, detrimental to the integrity of the game, and disrespectful and dismissive to football fans.”
The NFL wants proposition bets removed from sportsbooks, but the law of Nevada allows them to continue. To generate as much handle as possible, the SuperBook has produced 442 props.
Offerings include betting on who will be the MVP of Super Bowl 53 – Tom Brady is the favorite at even odds, and Jared Goff next at 2/1. “Will there be a safety?” is at Yes +600, No -900.
Bettors can also wager on the Patriots' chances of scoring a touchdown in each quarter. Yes, New England will score a TD in the first quarter is at -110, -270 in the second, -170 in the third, and -220 in the fourth. The odds favor the team getting into the end zone in each period.
The same TD lines for the Rams are even in the first, -240 in the second, -150 in the third, and -190 in the fourth.
