Sheff Utd v Wigan Barclays Premiership Football betting Preview - 13.05.07 Kick Off 15:00Wigan Worth a Flutter For Conspiracy Theorists
The last round of matches in the Premiership this Sunday sees three teams seeking to avoid the last relegation place alongside Charlton Athletic and Watford.
As things stand, West Ham United will survive if they can secure a point from their final game, no matter what happens in the match between their relegation rivals - Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic.
However, West Ham's last match is away to champions Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson's team will surely be looking to put on a performance in front of their fans as a way of expressing their thanks for their support throughout the season.
Should West Ham lose, the situation is such that a Wigan victory at Sheffield United would see The Hammers relegated (provided the margin of victory for Wigan wasn't several goals higher than West Ham's margin of defeat).
Given the fall-out of the Carlos Tevez/Javier Mascherano transfer saga, it's a result that would probably please everyone other than those with a vested interest in the Upton Park club.
The scenario could theoretically arise where West Ham are perhaps 3:0 down at Old Trafford with 10-minutes remaining, while the game at Bramall Lane is still 0:0. That would leave Wigan still facing the drop.
However, neither club involved at Bramall Lane will have any time for The Hammers on Sunday, so with Wigan pushing for a goal and news filtering through to the players on the pitch of events in Manchester, a late winning goal for The Latics would see both Sheffield United and Wigan survive and send West Ham down.
Unlikely? Perhaps. Even so, the 8-1 available with Ladbrokes on the Double Result of half-time: draw; full-time: Wigan, looks well worth a small interest.
