Premiership Predictions, Correct Score Football Tips for 16th to 17th January 2010

Best Predicted result of the previous week: “Stoke beating Fulham” especially after they hadn’t won for five games

Hello again. Last weekend was a bit of a disappointment as all bar two games were called off plus the Manchester city Blackburn game on Monday night & the Stoke Fulham game last Tuesday night. This meant that eight games were postponed in total. Of the games left I correctly predicted that Stoke would beat Fulham & that Manchester City would beat Blackburn. I had also predicted that Birmingham would beat Manchester United 1-0 but the referee decided to wave play on despite the linesman flagging for offside and as a consequence United scored to gain a 1-1 draw. Obviously there is no need to have any linesman as the referee is perfectly able to decide offside decisions. Funny it happened when it benefited Manchester United. I now count that as five points they have been given this season so far, ie, two points against Manchester City at home, two points against Arsenal at Home & of course the point against Birmingham. I could mention the reserve sides that Wolves & Wigan put out against them at old Trafford & not against any of the other top teams but I can’t be bothered. Chelsea have had two points given them by the ref at home to Spurs when spurs should have been given a penalty when the score was 1-0 & all the other sides have had no points given them by bad referee decisions. Funny that???? Without those points United would be below Arsenal in the table & only ahead of Manchester City on goal difference. Arsenal with that extra point from old Trafford would be only two points behind Chelsea.

Onto this weeks games & lets hope for an improvement in health & safety standards, err, I mean the weather.

Match 1: Chelsea - Sunderland: (Saturday 16th January 3pm):

With both clubs having their games postponed last weekend they will both be hoping that this games gets the go ahead from the “Health & Safety” Mafia. Chelsea are two points ahead at the top of the table above Manchester United & Arsenal, though Arsenal do of course have that game in hand against Bolton at Home. Both Clubs won their FA Cup games easily against lower league opponents. Chelsea won their last League game 2-1 against Fulham & I can see a similar result in this game. Sunderland have only claimed five points away from home with draws at Manchester United & Blackburn & the one victory so far this season against Bolton on the opening day of the season. They did grab a well deserved point at Blackburn in their last League game which stopped the rot so to speak in terms of their away form. Still can’t see them gaining anything at Sunderland but they should make it a close game.

Result Prediction: A close win for Chelsea

Score Prediction: Chelsea 2 Sunderland 1

Match 2: Everton - Manchester City: (Saturday 16th January 5.30pm):

Manchester City have now won five on the trot, four in the League & the FA Cup game against Middlesbrough away. They have now climbed up to forth in the table, ahead of spurs & only four points behind Arsenal having played the same amount of games as them. Their latest victory was an easy 4-1 victory over Blackburn (as I Predicted). They are playing Manchester United in the League cup 1st leg next Week & it will be interesting to see if they are able to keep their minds off that game while playing Everton. Everton have improved of late & are now six games unbeaten in the league as well as their 3-1 win against Carlisle in the Cup. They gained a very good 2-2 draw at Arsenal last Saturday in a game they were very unlucky to lose. This will be a close game methinks but Manchester City will just shade it.

Result Prediction: An away win for Manchester City

Score Prediction: Everton 1 Manchester City 2

Match 3: Manchester United - Burnley: (Saturday 16th January 3pm):

Burnley have appointed ex Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws as manager. This is a dreadful appointment as he will take them down. He was on the verge of taking Sheffield Wednesday down from the Championship so why on earth should he do better at Burnley? They have Manchester United away in his first game & I can’t really see them getting anything from this game despite Manchester United’s average form over the last month or so. United of course scrapped a draw at Birmingham last Saturday thanks to the referee (again) & are lucky to not be out of the title chase already as far as I am concerned. They have already lost five times this season including a 1-0 defeat at Burnley in only the second game of the season. That was a great result for Burnley but I really can’t see that result being repeated on Saturday. An easy home win for Manchester United & they won’t need an extra seven minutes of time added on to help their cause this time out.

Result Prediction: Manchester United to win

Score Prediction: Manchester United 3 Burnley 1

Match 4: Portsmouth - Birmingham: (Saturday 16th January 3pm):

Birmingham are having a great season as everybody knows & after such a dreadful start. They are now 14 games unbeaten after they beat a very good Nottingham Forest side 1-0 in their FA Cup third replay match on Tuesday night. I believe this unbeaten run is a new club record? Whatever, it is still a pretty remarkable run. They held Manchester United at home on Saturday & would have won if it wasn’t for the referee. This result against United & a previous home draw with Chelsea proves that this run is not a fluke. This game will be tricky for them as Portsmouth are fighting for their lives & managed to somehow win their FA Cup replay against Coventry away on Tuesday night. This result will give them some confidence I suspect. They need it. They are bottom of the table, four points adrift of the other clubs above them. In their previous home game they were thrashed 4-1 by Arsenal. I think they will just hold Birmingham to a draw but it will be a point that to be honest is not enough to keep them up come the end of the season.

Result Prediction: A score draw

Score Prediction: Portsmouth 1 Birmingham 1

Match 5: Stoke - Liverpool: (Saturday 16th January 12.45pm):

Stoke got a much deserved win against Fulham last midweek. They made it hard for themselves though after being 3-0 up at half time & just getting to the finish line despite conceding two second half goals to run out winners by three goals to two. This result has pushed them up to 10th in the table. Liverpool are seventh in the table but are ahead of stoke by nine points, so in theory this game should be an away win, especially as Liverpool managed a 1-0 at Aston Villa in their last League game. They could only manage a 1-1 draw at Lowly Reading in the FA Cup in their last game however. Liverpool have been found out this season & that’s why I think they will lose this game. They have already lost five times away this season & I think they will make it six on Saturday.

Result Prediction: Stoke to win

Score prediction: Stoke 2 Liverpool 0

Match 6: Tottenham - Hull City: (Saturday January 16th 3pm):

Hull are second from bottom in the table & out of the FA cup having lost at Wigan 4-1. Good result lads. Hull have not gained three points since they beat Everton at home at the end of November. They have drawn a few & can claim that their comeback in getting a point at Bolton in a 2-2 draw in their last league game cost Gary Megson his job as Bolton Boss. So it’s not all that bad. It is very tight down at the bottom of the table so a couple of wins could see them get out of the relegation zone. Personally I don’t think they will. Spurs have dropped below Manchester City in the table to fifth simply because they have not played due to their game being postponed last Saturday. Spurs are having a good season & must be a good outside bet to get a top four placing come the end of the season. This game to me is therefore a formality. A home win for Spurs. Wonder if Chas & Dave will be there?

Result Prediction: Tottenham to win

Score Prediction: Tottenham 3 Hull 0

Match 7: Wolves - Wigan: (Saturday January 16th 3pm):

Wolves won their last game at Tranmere in the FA Cup but that game will be seen as a minor irritation compared to the Wigan game. So far apart from the Portsmouth home game Wolves are winning those games that they need to in order to collect enough points to stay up. Their victories against Burnley, Fulham, Bolton & Saturday’s opponents Wigan would bear this out. They need to win this game to put some more daylight between them & the teams below them in the table. Wigan have started to wobble in the league despite their 4-1 victory against Hull in The FA Cup last time out. I can seriously see Wigan getting relegated & anybody present at their 9-1 defeat at Spurs would not be to surprised. A close home victory for Wolves to add further woe to Wigan.

Result Prediction: Wolves to win

Score Prediction: Wolves 2 Wigan 1

Match 8: Aston Villa - West Ham: (Sunday January 17th 1.30pm):

Aston Villa got back to winning ways after losing two league games on the trot to Arsenal & Liverpool by beating Blackburn in The FA Cup. Because of their two league defeats they have now dropped to 6th in the table below Spurs & Manchester City. They should get back to winning ways against a West Ham side who were dumped put of the FA Cup at home to Arsenal 2-1 after leading 1-0 at half time. That result seemed to sum up West Ham’s season, plenty of effort but just that little bit lacking in the final third. Villa are in the League cup semis as well & will be hoping that their cup runs don’t get in the way of their efforts to get in the Champions League. A home win to add to West Ham’s misery.

Result Prediction: Aston Villa to win

Score Prediction: Aston Villa 3 West Ham 1

Match 9: Blackburn - Fulham: (Sunday January 17th 3pm):

Blackburn will probably have one eye on their League cup Semi final with Aston Villa & that might explain why they have not won in the League since the 22nd of November when they beat Bolton away 2-0. That was nine games ago, admittedly they have drawn five of those games. Their away form is still crap though as proved by their 4-1 defeat at Manchester City on Monday night (as I Predicted). Fulham are having a much better season. They are still in Europe & The Fa Cup after beating Swindon at Home. They lost their last game at Stoke & I can see them losing this game as well because Blackburn play a similar type of football, i.e., boring & not nice to watch. A home win but a close game.

Result Prediction: Blackburn to win

Score Prediction: Blackburn 2 Fulham 1

Match 10: Bolton - Arsenal: (Sunday January 17th 4pm):

Ironic that Arsenal play Bolton in a matter of days, first in this game & then next Wednesday. Arsenal should win both as Bolton are having a crap season. They have replaced Gary Megson with Owen Coyle which suggests that the Board of Directors were fed up with the style of football been served up by the last three managers. I can’t see Owen Coyle keeping Bolton up but time will tell. Arsenal were lucky to gain a point against Everton last Saturday after getting a late goal in a 2-2 draw. They are still third but breathing down Chelsea’s & Manchester United’s necks in the title race. An away win but Bolton will probably make it tough as per usual.

Result Prediction: Arsenal to win

Score Prediction: Bolton 1 Arsenal 3

That’s until next week. Good luck.
