Spurs to Overcome King Kev
Tottenham v Newcastle – Kick-off: Wed 30 March 15:00
Over the years, legend has it that Kevin Keegan’s motivation makes his players ‘feel ten feet tall’. Perhaps he could have done with goalposts of a similar size to spare Newcastle’s blushes until last week’s morale boosting victory at home to Fulham.
Since then, ‘King Kev’ has been claiming that Michael Owen is ‘world class’, warrants a regular place in England’s starting eleven and apparently ‘never realised how good he was until now’. There are a couple of things he needs to give more thought to. Firstly, Owen has been ravaged by injuries for the best part of three years. He’s played as many games for England as he has for Newcastle (very few), has lost yards of pace and his goal ratio has faltered alarmingly. Also, did Keegan ever watch Owen whilst he was manager of England? Who knows, if he’d have realised Owen’s ability at the time, the national team’s fortunes may have been more favourable.
As it has happens, Newcastle’s lack of success reaches thirty-nine years and unless things change dramatically next season, Keegan could find himself being pushed out rather than walking away in his trademark bizarre manner. He brings his Newcastle team to face a Spurs side who’ve scored more goals at home than other team in the Premiership, so the odds are probably not going in the visitors’ favour. With Newcastle looking unconvincing at both ends of the pitch, it’s difficult to see any other outcome other than a home win, but having predicted a dour 1-0 win to Chelsea in the last Spurs related article, I’ve probably jinxed Spurs’ chances of taking all three points on Sunday.
I wonder if Darren Bent may cause another shock to all Spurs fans… coming on as a substitute and actually playing well. My prediction of the score being accurate seems more likely.
