after a six-month run of poor results and performances, not to mention a dramatic drop in attendances and a distinct lack of goals. The market in terms of his successor is already quite lively, with Dennis Wise and Claudio Ranieri (both well known to Bates from their Chelsea days) having already usurped early front-runner Alan Curbishley as favourites for the post. One decent outsider for the role might be Luton Town boss Mike Newell, a manager who has not only done well with limited resources at Kenilworth Road, but whose stance against dodgy goings on in the game would seem to strike a chord with Bates himself.
Luton also play an attractive brand of football that has been missing from Elland Road of late and Newell may also feel that he has taken The Hatters as far as he can.
The next manager market is always liable to be a volatile one, but at 14-1 with William Hill, Newell looks worth a small interest here.
