Looking for Some Stimulation

Written by Nick Luck on Wednesday, 16 April 2008

It’s a fantastic day’s racing, exclusive on Racing UK. It is the first day of the Classic trials at Newmarket and some of the big aspirants for the 1000 Guineas go to post in the Nell Gwyn. It is also the first of a three-day meeting at Cheltenham and it is tremendous stuff.

I have taken a selection from each venue and found it hard to whittle them down. A horse I loved last year is a horse called Stimulation. He is very talented, fills the eye and I would be surprised if he does not go close in the European Free Handicap.

At Beverley I fancy Melalchrist. He is a horse that tends to preserve his best for Beverley and he is drawn well in stall 11.

At Cheltenham, Ofarel d’Airy has been a little disappointing this season but I will give him one last chance in the feature handicap chase.

Mick Fltzgerald has undergone another operation to realign some vertebrae in his neck. He had a crashing fall in the Grand National and all things being equal, his recovery is progressing well. Whether he will end up sitting on a horse again is another matter. At the age of 37 and two broken necks, somebody is perhaps telling him now is the time to do something less dangerous.
