AZ Alkmaar Can Make Things Awkward For Newcastle
It all looked to be going so well for Newcastle United in their UEFA Cup 1st leg against AZ Alkmaar when Glenn Roeder's men romped into an early 3:0 lead. By the end of the match though, the outcome was far from clearcut, with Newcastle eventually winning 4:2, but the Dutch side still very much in the tie courtesy of their two away goals.The return leg in Holland is likely to provide a stern test for Newcastle, with Louis van Gaal's free-scoring side being more than capable of overturning their 1st leg deficit, with players of the calibre of Shota Arveladze, Danny Koevermans and Mouusa Dembele sure to fancy their chances against an inexperienced Newcastle defence.
Having to chase the tie does mean that the Dutch team could be exploited defensively by the pace of Obafemi Martins on the break, but the 20-21 available for an AZ Alkmaar win on the night with Totesport still looks generous, with the price seeming to owe more to a greater recognition of the English side than any realistic assessment of the situation and Alkmaar's qualities.
