With nine wins from their last 11 league matches, Roy Keane's Sunderland have moved to within touching distance of the top two and the automatic promotion places in the Championship.Tuesday evening sees Stoke City, a team still with hopes of securing a play-off spot themselves, visiting the Stadium of Light for a game in which both teams realistically need maximum points to keep their respective targets in sight.
Sunderland took 8000 fans for Saturday's 2:0 win at Barnsley for a game that was played in something of a carnival atmosphere. It is support like that will prove invaluable over the remaining games and the self-belief at the club should ensure that even without the injured Carlos Edwards and, probably, Dwight Yorke, the Mackems should have enough momentum behind them to see off the visitors. Stoke are themselves missing a key player in the influential midfielder Lee Hendrie.
Although the visitors are certainly no mugs, the 8-13 available with Coral on the Sunderland win looks a reasonable price given the current form of Keane's men.
