Darkness
Could Darkness spring another 100/1 National surprise?
There are some punters who like to look no further than those at the head of the Grand National betting list, while others are more daring and look for a horse with a chance at longer odds. Last year 100/1 winner Mon Mome proved there is value to be had in the Grand National, if only you can find it, writes Elliot Slater.
Looking at those horses priced in a similar bracket to the 2009 winner, there are a number for whom a reasonable case can be made. Among them is Darkness, a horse owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and trained by Charlie Egerton - a handler who is a past master at preparing fragile to horses to run well after a long absence.
A quality chaser at his best, Darkness won the Grade 1 Feltham Novices' Chase at Sandown and then went on to run a fine third to the high class Star Du Mohaison in the Royal & Sun Alliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He subsequently broke down when tackling the Scottish National and was off the track for two-and-a-half years before returning to prove he still retained plenty of ability. He ran third to Possol in a hot handicap chase at Haydock and then defeated Church Island at Newbury off a mark of 143.
Darkness tackled last year's Grand National and finished 13th after making two earth shuddering errors. With a clear round he might have been in the thick of things.
Last year's Aintree run focused the mind of connections who have shown tremendous patience in targeting the 2010 renewal without a previous outing. Egerton did just the same with Mely Moss in 2000, his horse running a stormer to chase home Papillon at odds of 50/1.
At 100/1 you could do worse than have a little each-way on Darkness, a horse with proven ability at a high level, to step into the Grand National limelight for his theatrical owners.
Meanwhile, racing fans will be keeping an eye on the Cheltenham Festival weather ahead of the big event in the knowledge that heavy going could upset many well fancied horses at the big event.

- Royal Ascot Spread Betting Preview
- Mon, 07 Jun 2010 15:56:00 EDT - Tuesday's highlight is the King's Stand Stakes, the second race on the card, which features some of the fastest horses anywhere in the world. The race has taken on an international flavour in the past decade with three of the last five winners being trained in Australia and the other two in France and Spain. Spread bettors will be interested to see how the Australian-trained Nicconi fares, but patriotic punters will surely be looking at last year's runner-up Fleeting Spirit and recent impressive Haydock winner Kingsgate Native. Scenic Blast became only the second favourite to win in the past decade last year and spread SP buyers will remember Equiano's win at 22/1 in 2008.
- Derby and Oaks Spread Betting Preview
- Thu, 03 Jun 2010 10:53:00 EDT - SP spread sellers have done well, by and large, in this race in recent times. Since Cecil's Ramruma won the Oaks in 1999, six favourites have obliged and only one horse bigger than 13/2 has won in that time. However, that was a big shock when Look Here won at 33/1 in 2008. There has been an interesting pattern emerge when it comes to winning distances in this race for spread bettors to consider. In the last six years, three of the races have been won by margins of 3 ¾, 6 and 7 lengths, while the other three sandwiched between those have been 1 ½, ½ and last year's head. If the pattern is to continue, we could be set for an easy Oaks victory.
- Kentucky Derby 2010 Preview
- Sat, 01 May 2010 07:53:00 EDT - Lookin at Lucky and Sidney's Candy may be factors in the race but with their post positions they are vulnerable favorites. What that means is that you should be looking for a horse that can handle the muddy track and win at a nice price. Horses that might fit that bill are Super Saver (15-1), Devil May Care (10-1), Mission Impazible (20-1) and Awesome Act (10-1). Super Saver has a win and a second in the mud so you know he can handle the slop.

However, the 13/8 favourite for the first colts' classic is going to have to be on the top of his game to resist Elusive Pimpernel, who was the highly impressive winner of the Craven Stakes last week. Canford Cliffs let himself down in going under to stable companion Dick Turpin in the Greenham Stakes and Awzaan has replaced Arcano as Sheikh Hamdan's classic hope.
- Three against the Grand National field
- Thu, 08 Apr 2010 06:50:00 EDT - Unlike most other major races, when it comes to betting on the John Smith's Grand National sometimes it's best to tackle the challenge with more than one string to your bow. That's why I'm suggesting three horses to consider for the world's greatest steeplechase, writes Elliot Slater. Even though Venetia Williams' Mon Mome won the race in tremendous style last year, the fact he was a shock 100/1 winner caused many to view his win as just a flash in the pan. His subsequent performances though have proved he is a serious racehorse and is arguably a better

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, looking for his third John Smith's Grand National victory after Earth Summit and Bindaree, had backed his charge at Kempton and looks set to send him to the Cheltenham Festival before having a crack at the Aintree feature, for which he is now as short as 25/1 with some firms.
