Such is the weight of expectation at Chelsea that anything less than winning the Champions League will be regarded as something of a disappointment under the Roman Abramovich regime.
This season looks to be their best chance yet, with the likes of Barcelona struggling just to escape the group stage and missing key players through long-term injuries, while AC Milan and Real Madrid both seem to be teams in transition.
Many questioned the wisdom in signing Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack over the summer, but these two provide the start quality that could make all the difference at this level of competition.
Ladbrokes currently offer Chelsea at 4-1 to win the competition and that looks a tempting price as things stand.
