Champions League Predictions for 16th/17th to the 23rd/24th February 2010
Hello everyone & welcome back to the European Cup, err, I mean the Champions League. We are now in the knock out stage so it should be more interesting than the group stages. In the weekend just gone I had two correct Predictions in the FA Cup 5th Round which were Chelsea beating Cardiff & Fulham beating Notts County. I should double that with WBA & Aston Villa replaying against Reading & Crystal Palace. No correct scores for the 5th Round unlike the previous rounds. I have not yet worked out my FA Cup Prediction rate in terms of correct results but I would guess that it is around the 50% rate like the Premiership.
Anyway, back to the Champions League. UEFA have decided that the first legs of the next round of the Champions League should be spread over two weeks, so Manchester United play AC Milan tonight, Arsenal tomorrow night against Porto & then Chelsea play next Wednesday against Inter Milan. This same format will be used for the second legs as well. I have previewed them all in this article as well as two Premiership fixtures tonight & Wednesday. I have yet to work out UEFA‘s logic on this change of format but it will be complete ballshit. These people have to justify their massive wages by changing things. Good luck everyone.
Match 1: AC Milan – Manchester United (1st Leg): (Tuesday 7.45pm): (2nd leg Wed 10th March)
As you will have the media mention, Manchester United have never beaten AC Milan over two legs in Europe before. This encounter could & should change that. Manchester United are on a good run of form as we speak & are second in the Premiership table just behind Chelsea. The fact that they have already lost 5 games in the league this season already speaks volumes for a more competitive Premiership season then it does for United’s good form over the season so far. Despite not playing well in a lot of games they have managed to stay in touch. They are also in the League cup final against Aston Villa (a side who have taken four points off them this season). They were however dumped out of the FA Cup by third division, err, League 1 side Leeds at home. Ac Milan are third in Serie A, a full nine points behind their city rivals Inter. To be honest, they shouldn’t win the title this year, so their only chance of a big trophy is The European cup. They have an excellent record in the Champions league & it is only three years ago that they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final (2007). I think that the gap between the English & Italian League’s will give Manchester United victory but it will be close in the 1st leg.
Result Prediction: Manchester United to come out on top over 2 legs.
Score Prediction: AC Milan 1 Manchester United 1 (1st Leg)
Manchester United 2 AC Milan 0 (2nd Leg)

Arsenal got themselves back in the title race with a 1-0 win against Liverpool last week. They are still outsiders for the title but the way Chelsea & Manchester United keep dropping points you never know. Arsenal are out of the FA Cup, beaten 3-1 at Stoke in the 4th round. This could be a really difficult two legs for Arsenal but Porto are struggling this year in their domestic league. They could only draw 0-0 away at second from bottom Lexioes on Saturday, a bad result that some up their decline this year in the League. They are third in the table, nine points behind Benfica who are top. Arsenal qualified easily from their Champions League group before Christmas by coming top of their group while Porto came second behind Chelsea in their group. I think Arsenal will win this leg & go through over all.
Result Prediction: Arsenal to come out on top over 2 legs.
Score Prediction: Porto 1 Arsenal 2 (1st Leg)
Arsenal 2 Porto 0 (2nd Leg)

Chelsea are going very well, despite the odd hiccup along the way. They are top of the Premiership, In the FA Cup Quarter Finals after beating Cardiff City 4-1 on Saturday & still in Europe. They now play Inter who are top of Serie A (again) & look like retaining their title for another year. I believe that Chelsea are stronger than inter & that will be proved by them winning this tie over two legs. They will of course be playing against their old boss Jose Mourinho. Mourinho should not have been sacked as manager of Chelsea but he has no problem I am sure with the fans or the players. He will want to win this tie but the gap is so big between the English & Italian Leagues now that I really can’t see Inter winning this tie. This is a shame as I like Inter, they are not (as) corrupt s Juventus or AC Milan. In other words they are a proper football club with a Decent fan base compared to the other two. Still think Chelsea will win though.

Chelsea 2 Inter 0 (2nd Leg)

Match 1: Lyon – Real Madrid: (Tues 16th February 7.45pm): (2nd Leg Wed 10th March)
A close one this tie as Madrid are second in their League behind Barcelona while Lyon are 4th, some eight points from the top. Could this be the first time that Lyon don’t win their domestic league since man invented the wheel? Lyon are still a good side & they proved that with a 2-1 win at Liverpool in the group stages. Still think that Madrid will come out on top but only just.
Result Prediction: Real Madrid to win over two legs
Score Prediction: Lyon 1 Madrid 1 (1st leg), Madrid 2 Lyon 0 (2nd Leg)

Bayern are neck & neck with Bayer Laverkusen at the top of the Table. Only goal difference separates the two sides. It should be a very interesting end to the season in Germany. Bayern have not really looked like winning the Champions League since they reached the final in 1999, losing 2-1 to Manchester United (Unluckily). Fiorentina have drooped a bit in recent weeks but they are thrilled to have reached this far in Europe & will raise their game. I think that Bayern will win this tie, simply because they have more expierence in europe.

Score Prediction: Bayern 3 Fiorentina 1 (1st Leg), Fiorentina 1 Bayern 1 (2nd Leg)

I really can't see past a Barcelona Victory in this tie. They are top of the spannish League & to be honest I expect them to win the title again. They are also Champion League holders having beaten Manchester United 2-0 last May. They will be up against a German side who lost 3-1 at home to hamburg on Saturday to leave them 10th in the table & looking like they will not qualify for Europe next year. An easy two leg victory for Barcelona.
